Eastern Cape Game Reserves

Eastern Cape Game Reserves

The Cape isn't one of the top destinations for game viewing in Africa; there are wilder places in the countries further north. However, if you would like a few days of game-viewing in the Cape, then there are several options – all of which are malaria-free.

Safari camps and lodges in and around Addo Elephant Park

Just over an hour's drive north of Port Elizabeth, on the eastern end of the Garden Route, the Addo Elephant Park has expanded to cover 1,250km² of undulating grasslands, interspersed with dense evergreen thickets. Though the very relaxed elephants are the attraction here (over 350 of them), you'll also find good numbers of black rhino, buffalo, eland, red hartebeest, kudu, (recently reintroduced) lion, and a rich diversity of birdlife.

Gorah Elephant Camp

Situated in a private concession within Addo Elephant Park, this comfortable place sets a high standard. Its 11 colonial-style, tented luxury suites are very spacious and elegant, and a stay here also includes two 4WD game drives a day! (Read more about Gorah Camp…)

Elephant House

For a more modest location, Elephant House is a lovely guest house just outside the park, with nine comfortable rooms, two swimming pools, and manicured gardens. It's ideal as a base for your own game drives, or to take advantage of the escorted drives arranged from here. (Read more about the Elephant House…)

Other safari camps and game lodges in the Southern Cape

Farms in the southern Cape can be large, and some land here has now been converted into private sanctuaries for game, including:

Shamwari Game Reserve

Protecting 250km² of the Eastern Cape's bush, Shamwari is probably the best known of this area's private game reserves – and a good choice for a few days' safari. Split into six separate lodges with a total of 58 rooms, varying in amenities, luxuries and costs. (Read more about Shamwari Game Reserve…)

Kwandwe Private Game Reserve

Covering 200km², Kwandwe is one of the Cape's best private game reserves, with high standard accommodation in four different game lodges (Great Fish River Lodge, Uplands Homestead, Ecca Lodge and Melton Manor), guiding and game – and some feeling of 'wild Africa'. (Read more about Kwandwe Private Game Reserve…)

Kariega Game Reserve

Kariega covers 60km² and is one of the area's older game reserves. It has four different properties (Kariega Lodge, Ukhozi Lodge, Homestead and River Lodge), and gives a reliable game experience, with activities including day and night drives in open 4WD vehicles, as well as walks. Samara Private Game Reserve

Far from the other game reserves, Samara covers 280km² of wild open land, and delivers a very high-quality experience in all respects – from accommodation (Karoo Lodge and the exclusive Manor House) and food, to activities and guiding; we recommend it highly!
