The Protea Hotel in Upington is situated on the banks of the Orange River
Protea Hotel Upington: Our full report
Upington is the gateway town to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and Augrabies Falls National Park. After flying in from either Johannesburg or Cape Town and collecting your car, you then drive the 260km to the Kgalagadi or 130km to Augrabies.
The town itself is quite a sleepy place with beautifully landscaped gardens and large graceful trees. The Protea Hotel Upington is situated on the banks of the Orange River offering a tranquil place to stay if your flights do not enable you to get through to the Kgalagadi on your arrival day, or if you have an early morning flights out.
Although none of us has visited the hotel, we understand that the accommodation is of a good standard with all the 58 rooms having been recently renovated. All the en-suite rooms have air-conditioning and a colour satellite TV.
The Protea Upington has a pool where you can relax and also 'Scotty's Bar' which is great for sundowners or pre-dinner drinks.
There is no restaurant here for lunch or evening meals, however there are four restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.
