Ibo is home to three thousand people, mostly living in traditional villages, just outside the original old town, most of which haven't changed for thousands of years. Fishermen still build teak dhows by hand on the beach, silversmiths hand-craft intricate jewellery using ancient techniques and tools in the fort, and curious children call out traditional greetings. A visit here isn't staged; it's a friendly way to experience a real slice of African island life. - View lodge details

Khwai Tented Camp is fairly unusual amongst Botswana's safari camps in that it is near a village which visitors are encouraged to visit. Khwai Village is home to river bushman, and you have the chance to be sensitively introduced to these people: visit a homestead, meet some of the elders and learn how they live in this wild environment. Crucially, your visit here benefits the village by funding projects which were started by the camp. - View lodge details

One of the activities offered at Edo's Camp is a visit to a nearby bushman village. The camp also offers the option to enjoy an evening of traditional bushman dancing. These shows are performed by a group set up as a community initiative and all proceeds go back into the local area. The group would need to be requested in advance of your visit and there would be an additional charge for this. - View lodge details

Likoma Island is home to local villages as well as the lodge. Village tours with a guide can be arranged, or you can take a map of the island and just set off – on foot or bike – depending on how much you'd like to explore. We found the locals very friendly, and it's easy to arrange an informal community tour – with or without a visit to the Cathedral. - View lodge details

Okahirongo Lodge is set in the remote Purros Conservancy, in Namibia's northwest corner. Here, you'll have the option to visit a local Himba village, and to gain insights into the culture and everyday life of these semi-nomadic, desert-dwelling people. The Himba have managed to maintain much of their traditional lifestyle, and a visit there is very interesting! - View lodge details

Kikadini Villas stands beside the laid-back Zanzibari village of Jambiani – which is, in our experience, the cleanest and most friendly village on the island. We can warmly recommend that visitors take an inexpensive village tour here – as these are very personal, low-key introductions to the local villagers with fascinating insights into their culture. - View lodge details
