Lagoon Camp Kwando-Linyanti area, Botswana

As well as the excellent birding to be enjoyed within the Kwando Reserve, there is a wide variety of game here including lion, leopard, large herds of buffalo and elephant (particularly from May-Oct), red lechwe, kudu, warthog, tsessebe, waterbuck, reedbuck, giraffe, spotted hyena and occasionally cheetah. Lagoon Camp is especially renowned for its regular wild dog sightings as they have denned in the area for many years. The best time to see wild dog is during the denning season (June/July) and for a month or two after when the pups are too young to move far. Pools of water that gather in the mopane forest during the rainy season (Jan-Mar) allow the packs to roam widely, so they are seldom seen over this time. There are also crocodile and pods of hippo in and around the waterways. One particularly enjoyable activity is a cruise on the double-decker boat; on a bright day you may see hippo walking along under the crystal clear water beside you. - View lodge details

Mapula Lodge Okavango Delta Safari Reserves, Botswana

There is plenty of plains game in Mapula Reserve including zebra, kudu, impala, steenbok, waterbuck, buffalo, lechwe, reedbuck and giraffe. Also present are elephant, jackal, baboon, monkey, lion and leopard. On our recent visit to Mapula Lodge we found a pack of wild dogs with their pups – unusually the beta female had also recently given birth to a second litter. On our night drives we saw porcupine, caracal, bush baby spring hare and genet. - View lodge details

Mombo Camp Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana

Mombo is one of the most astonishing wildlife areas in the Delta and because it's in a remote area of Moremi the game viewing is very exclusive. The animal densities here are some of the highest you'll find and the landscape is quintessentially Delta. It's also open, providing excellent viewing. As well as excellent predator numbers there is always the unique chance to spot one of Northern Botswana's very few remaining rhino too. - View lodge details

Jao Camp Okavango Delta Safari Reserves, Botswana

Jao is best known as a water-based camp, for its excellent boat and mekoro trips, but also offers 4WD safaris on the dry-land areas within the Jao Reserve. Expect large herds of red lechwe, reedbuck and tsessebe – and smaller groups of buffalo and elephant. Big prides of lion are the norm, and leopard sightings are increasingly good. Obviously crocodile and hippo are abundant – and it's a good place to try and see sitatunga. - View lodge details

Kwara Camp Okavango Delta Safari Reserves, Botswana

As Kwara Reserve is very large and covers a wide range of environments, game is consequently varied. Tsessebe and impala abound, along with healthy populations of zebra, red lechwe, wildebeest, reedbuck, kudu and giraffe. There are elephant and large herds of buffalo moving through the area, as well as all the big cats and occasionally wild dog. The ability to drive off road within the private reserve often enhances game sightings. - View lodge details

Lebala Camp Kwando-Linyanti area, Botswana

Common species found here include impala, warthog, red lechwe, kudu, tsessebe, giraffe, steenbok, vervet monkey and baboon. Lion, leopard and spotted hyena are common – cheetah are sometimes seen. Herds of zebra and wildebeest are resident from around May to December; elephants and buffalo follow a similar pattern, but there are individuals around all year. Kwando is also a good reserve for sightings of wild dog. - View lodge details

Little Kwara Okavango Delta Safari Reserves, Botswana

Game is as varied as the wide range of habitats on the Kwara Reserve. Predators are regularly seen with decent sightings of leopard and cheetah and a large number of male lion sometimes coming together to form a strong coalition. Antelope abound, along with healthy populations of zebra, wildebeest and giraffe. Large herds of elephant and buffalo often frequent the area and wild dog are regular visitors. - View lodge details

DumaTau Kwando-Linyanti area, Botswana
DumaTau's area is well known for its population of cats and during my brief stay I saw leopard, lion and cheetah. During the dry season there are also plenty of elephants in this area, and some even come through the camp. Wild dog are also often seen in this area, and there is a great variety of other plains game including large herds of buffalo, zebra and impala. - View lodge details

Camp Kalahari Kalahari's Salt Pans, Botswana
Visits to a family of meerkats are an amazing experience here. Meanwhile, during the rainy season (Dec–Apr), zebra can often be seen here in their thousands as they migrate in search of new grass. Throughout the year, lions and brown hyena frequent this area although the general wildlife densities are low due to the lack of water in the environment. - View lodge details

Little Mombo Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana
The Moremi Game Reserve is renowned for superb game-viewing – and the Mombo area is the best in the reserve. It has excellent populations of lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and white rhino. Wild dog are also found here along with cheetah, hyena, black-backed jackal and a wide range of plains game including red lechwe, giraffe, impala and warthog. - View lodge details
