Great ideas for honeymoons

Many of our best camps and lodges make very romantic destinations – so singling out any particular one is very difficult. All go out of their way to make your stay special, but if it's your honeymoon or you are celebrating a special anniversary, then they'll try even harder. They know how important this is to you and will often plan surprises to make your stay especially memorable – perhaps a private dinner, a bottle of bubbly on arrival, or a bush bouquet for the bride. These aren't usually formulaic add-ons, but simply thoughtful camp managers making exceptional one-off arrangements.

Please tell us if it's your honeymoon or a special anniversary, and note it on the Special Requests section of our booking form – so that we can tell your hosts in Africa. Unlike many companies, our honeymoons cost exactly the same as any equivalent trips; we guarantee that it will only make a difference to your experience, not the price.

The 'classic' African honeymoon is probably a luxurious safari followed by a romantic beach break – so Tanzania is the obvious choice. A few nights at Ras Kutani can help you to unwind as soon as you arrive, and then any of the camps in the Selous Game Reserve make stunning places to safari. For the adventurous, fly-camping can be very romantic.

For a more classic Tanzania honeymoon safari, covering some of the world's most famous game areas, consider a trip to Lake Manyara – where Lake Manyara Tree Lodge has particularly good in-room spa treatments. Beside the great, Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa's most romantic lodges is the extravagant Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. It's very costly, but you get what you pay for: stupendous location, marvellously theatrical décor, great food and service, and unexpectedly good bubble baths! In the Serengeti area, the most romantic camps are stylish, remote tented camps, so look to the billowing canvas at Sabora and Sayari.

After your safari, many of Zanzibar's palm-fringed beaches make idyllic honeymoon retreats. Sultan's Palace and Fumba Beach Lodge are particularly stylish and romantic; Pemba's Fundu Lagoon is very popular with a young and lively crowd; whilst those seeking something quieter should head to Mafia Island where Pole Pole is a romantic spot with a good masseuse. If money is no object, then the ultimate beach getaways are Zanzibar's Mnemba Island Lodge or Mozambique's Quilálea or Vamizi islands.

The perfect addition to Victoria Falls is a safari to Botswana. Here many camps have a honeymoon suite – usually a luxurious tent which is more secluded than most, with a large double-bed and perhaps a moonlit shower or bath. Often there's no supplement for these rooms, but they do need to be booked well in advance. Baines' Camp has special 'star beds' that roll outside to sleep under the heavens, whilst every room at the luxurious Jao Camp and King's Pool has its own outdoor 'sala' – a cushioned private lounge that's open to the view.

Zambia's small, individual lodges can be very romantic. Consider the stunning honeymoon suite Chiawa Camp, or perhaps the naturally dreamy feel of Sausage Tree Camp's graceful white fabrics! Many camps here offer special honeymoon suites including Kapani and Tena Tena.

The spectacular Victoria Falls is a classic and very romantic destination. Here Tongabezi, Sindabezi and the Islands of Siankaba are all very romantic places to stay. Ask for a champagne breakfast on Livingstone Island as one of your wedding gifts!

For a beach holiday after a safari in Zambia, one close option is Lake Malawi. Here Kaya Mawa's spectacular honeymoon suite has its own private island, while nearby the powder-white sands of Nkwichi Lodge are a match for any coral island.

Every year a few honeymooners and many celebrating special anniversaries, travel to Namibia. It's an under-rated choice as the dunes can be dreamily romantic, and lodges like, Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp and Little Kulala have stunning honeymoon suites. Namibia's vast open spaces have a natural romance, and we'd suggest the honeymoon suite at Damaraland Camp, the relaxed charm at Huab Lodge, and the luxurious isolation of Serra Cafema as being particularly special.
