The bird life seen around Chongwe River Camp is exceptional. Fish eagles cry; carmine and white-fronted bee-eaters nest in cliffs, giant and malachite kingfishers flit along channels whilst herons fish. Special species include the red-winged pratincole, crested guinea fowl, Verraux's eagle, trumpeter hornbill, osprey, Pel's fishing owl and the stunning narina trogon which visits in the summer (Oct – Apr). - View lodge details

Lufupa's birdlife is excellent – with a variety of dry-land habitats as well as a particularly productive river. Favourites here include palm swifts, half-collared kingfishers, Pel's fishing owls and African finfoots – which are often seen skulking under riverside vegetation close to camp. Our last afternoon/night drive here yielded three superb sightings of different owl species. - View lodge details

Mwamba Bushcamp takes particularly good care of photographers. The hides here are excellent for getting great shots – and have been used by the BBC's Natural History unit, National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, amongst others. Mwamba's 4WD vehicles never take more than 2 guests per row of seats – and bean bags and camera covers are provided on request. - View lodge details

The small Busanga Bushcamp on the Busanga Plains is a wild spot with exciting birdlife. When the plains flood, Dec-June, there are high densities of water-birds, including saddle-billed storks and wattled cranes; whilst crowned cranes are often seen dancing. Endemics such as Chaplin's barbet and unusual species like Lady Ross's turaco are highlights of the wooded areas. - View lodge details

Mchenja Bushcamp stands beside the Luangwa River, and near several large lagoons – so has several different environments within easy reach. The birding here is good; with water-birds and many dry-country species. On one of our short visits we saw flocks and solitary yellow-billed storks, fish eagles, white-fronted bee-eaters, kingfishers and many others. - View lodge details

Kasanka is great for birdwatching as it is close to, and has many species in common with, the rainforests of Central Africa. Expect plenty of ibises, herons, kingfishers and bee-eaters, as well as wattled cranes, saddle-billed storks and tropical 'specials' like the green sunbird, Boehm's flycatcher, Lady Ross's lourie and the shy finfoot. - View lodge details

Chiawa is a good choice of camp for watching both water and land birds, and has guides who are excellent birders. Boating, canoeing, walks and their game-hide allow you to get close to birds without disturbing them. Previous sightings include an osprey, giant eagle owl, spurwinged geese, malachite and pied kingfishers and lilac breasted rollers. - View lodge details

The birding here is varied and Mwaleshi's guides are consistently top-notch. Whilst it shares most of its flora and fauna with South Luangwa, you will find a few bird species here that do not occur in South Luangwa, including the white-winged starling, the chestnut-mantled sparrow weaver, and the yellow-throated longclaw. - View lodge details

You'll find good safari guides at Chongwe River House and a superb location. From the foothills of the escarpment in one direction, to the great Zambezi River in the other – you'll find quite a range of different environments, and some very prolific birdlife. It's a top destination for keen bird-watchers. - View lodge details

The birdlife on the Busanga Plains is excellent. May in particular is well worth it for serious birders and Shumba is the only camp open here during this time. Traverse the floodplains by swamp boat in search of herons, ducks, storks and other waders or take a full-day trip to visit a breeding colony of open-billed storks. - View lodge details
