Kikadini Villas is a good place for families, best to book out a villa for exclusive use – which is remarkably reasonable value. This gives lots of space and flexibility, and a chef who can tailor your meals, and meal-times, around what you want. Kikadini can be a great introduction for children to a tranquil, but very real, Zanzibari village. Currently only children over 12 years can stay at Kikadini. - View lodge details

Fumba Beach Lodge has a relaxed atmosphere and some Deluxe rooms have interconnecting doors – perfect for families. There is a beautiful pool and the PADI dive-school will take children out on trips to learn to snorkel. There are no special facilities at Fumba for children, but we've seen the team here making a big effort to ensure that kids staying were having fun. - View lodge details

The Tembo Hotel is a great hotel for families staying in Stone Town. It has a relaxed atmosphere and there are usually a number of children playing around the pool area. The Tembo is also right on the beach, and although this is a town beach, which isn't ideal for swimming, the sand provides a great playground! - View lodge details

Sunrise is an inexpensive and very relaxed beach lodge which welcomes children. It is quite fun and informal, and doesn't have that 'quiet honeymoon'; feel that can make families with energetic children feel a little uncomfortable. There is also a large pool to keep kids entertained. - View lodge details

Breezes Beach Club is large but very safe and enclosed – with a big pool and the excellent Rising Sun Dive Centre for water-sports and PADI scuba diving courses. It's a great family destination for older, active children who will find plenty to do and occupy themselves. - View lodge details
