Fanjove Private Island Lodge

Fanjove Private Island Lodge: Our full report

Rooms
6 eco bandas
Open
All year

Brand new for 2013, Fanjove Private Island Lodge is set to be one of Tanzania’s most exclusive beach destinations. We haven’t yet had a chance to visit this lodge, but it’s been set up by operators who have been involved with the excellent Lake Manze in the Selous, and Mdonya in Ruaha, so we’re confident that this will be just as well run.

With only six eco bandas, guests here will have access to the crystal clear waters, 11 km of coral reef and unspoilt wild beaches. Each of the bandas is said to have a spectacular view of the ocean, and has been designed specifically to have the least impact upon the environment – there's only solar power here. The bandas look simple and rustic, they're not filled with western style luxuries, which would feel alien in this environment. Instead, the simple two-story a-frame bandas conjure up images of Robinson Crusoe and barefoot luxury.

By day, activities look to encompass nothing more strenuous than wandering round the sandy rim of the island watching out for the many multi-coloured birds, a visit to the old lighthouse, swimming in the sea, or testing out some of the water-based activities they’re hoping to set up such as diving and snorkeling. By night, keep your eye out for the rare coconut crab and enjoy watching the sun set from the communal dining area.
