On this safari holiday you’ll travel between two excellent reserves in a private 4WD, allowing you to see colourful rural scenes, which many travellers to southern Tanzania miss out. Whilst you'll explore the small yet interesting Mikumi National Park with your private guide, one of the lodge guides will accompany you in Selous Game Reserve. Your Tanzania safari holidays end with a light aircraft flight back to Dar es Salaam.
Your superior guide and private 4WD vehicle will meet you when you arrive at Dar es Salaam Airport for the drive to Mikumi National Park. This journey takes about four hours passing small villages and farm plots (shambas). Whilst in Mikumi you'll stay at the well situated Stanley's Kopje. Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania's quieter and more offbeat parks. Mikumi's open grasslands are home to a variety of wildlife including various antelope, elephant, giraffe and good numbers of wild dog. Vuma Hills is also a good base from which to take a day trip and hike in the fascinating Udzungwa Mountains; home to numerous special and endemic plant and animal species.
Heading from Mikumi, you drive to the Selous Game Reserve. It's a long but very interesting drive today, partly through rural countryside and partly through the various landscapes of the Selous Game Reserve. The Selous is one of Africa's largest parks and is home to huge diversity of animal, bird and plant life which you're knowledgeable guide will point out and tell you a bit about as you travel to Rufiji River Camp. Set high above the banks of the meandering Rufiji River the camp offers great views of hippo pods and basking crocodiles below. Spend four nights here enjoying game drives in open-sided 4WD safari vehicles and boat trips, all led by professional and interesting safari guides.
On your last morning you'll transfer to a nearby airstrip for a light aircraft transfer to Dar es Salaam. From here you can continue onto one of our beach add-on trips or your own journey arrangements.
