Selous Impala fly-camp review
This was GREAT fun - such an experience! Just try it!
I would reccomend the fly-camping which was one of the many highlights of our trip.
The highlight of our safari
Brilliant - it's incredibly exciting and you really get to feel the atmosphere of the bush. We loved the overnight camp and listened with some trepidation to the sound of hippos outside the tent.
Evening drinks watching the sunset were lovely and we were then served a simple but delicious evening meal prepared by the fly camp chef before heading off to our comfortable tents - to be recommended
Lions as neighbours at Selous Impala fly-camp
We stopped to look at a pride of about eight lions just moments before reaching Selous Impala fly-camp. At first it seemed very daunting that these magnificent creatures were our neighbours but given the camp's staff of six, including a ranger with a gun, we gradually chilled out. And we enjoyed the ingenuity of the facilities, complete with wash tent with canvas bucket shower.
The luxury extended to a dining area where the white jacketed chef served wonderful cuisine. Our guide was enormously knowledgeable and entertaining, regaling us with animal stories in the evening and taking us on a walking safari the next morning when we saw the tracks of much game that had been walking almost beside out tents the night before - from leopard and lion to buffalo and hyena.

We expected our fly-camp to be back to the basics of camping but we were in for a surprise! We had a tent by a beautiful lake with its own warm bush shower. The food was exceptional and was provided by our own kitchen team! Having our guide Hussein join us for dinner was great as we had chance to talk while the sun went down and the camp fire burnt beside us.
Waking up to the sound of Baboons making alarm calls during the night was a bit disconcerting but added to the whole experience. We found Leopard tracks behind the camp on our bush walk the following morning. We highly recommend the fly camp and a bush walk as you feel more part of the surroundings.

We were prepared for and had expected a more primitive or "closer to nature experience".
This was still luxury camping admittedly at a temporary camp site.

We missed our "tent" at our main camp. ;-)

We were a bit nervous about this to begin with as it felt a bit scary to be camping out in the bush, but in the end it was brilliant and memorable experience, and of course there was nothing to worry about! Even when staying in an open camp like Imapala, the fly camp brings you even closer to the wildlife. We were camped on the shores of a lake with a great camp fire, 200 meters away from a pride of lions with Elephants walking through the camp in the night.
The tents are obviously more basic than the main camp, but even so it is very comfortable and has everything you need including a shower and toilet, and they even bring you warm water to wash with in the morning!
The food is as good as at the main camp and they still bring you your early morning tea when you wake up!

We have had difficulty grading this.
It was as described but we would have preferred a more authentic experience, perhaps cooking and eating around a fire rather than served food at a table formally set. Although we ate with the guides it gave the feeling of living in the bush in colonial times.
We really enjoyed walking in the bush particularly the long walk back to Impala. A great experience we would not have missed.
Camping, but not as we know it!
Great experience: felt safe and comfortable but also "out in the bush".
Quite luxurious compared with camping in the UK!
Unfortunately we slept through any animals prowling in the night, but our guides reassured us that they had been awake all night keeping the wildlife at bay! Lovely to go for an early morning walk following the tracks.

We enjoyed the experience of the fly camp and the chance to be out of the main camp.
The service was great and the location by the lake was good. We had a walking tour in the moring before breaking camp and enjoyed this early morning walk.
