My family's first safari trip.

Tanzania between 6 Jul 2013 and 17 Jul 2013

Trip rating: Excellent
"Although I have been on several safaris, this was my families first experience and I had several criteria.

A country I hadn't visited.
At least two camps which would give a wide range of habitat so that we could go on drives, walks and boats.
Game viewing without 50 other vehicles around
Small camps which concentrated less on luxury and more on the game viewing and the bush experience but without sleeping on campbeds and washing in buckets.
Guides who were enthusiastic and knowledgeable and who loved the animals and their country
Open vehicles and preferably ones with only 4 to 6 people.

Eleanor came up trumps in every respect. On day one, when we reached Selous camp after a stunning game drive from the airstrip, my son said "mum, if we go home now this will still have exceeded all my expectations "

Experience piled on experience - so many memorable moments - the matriarch elephant who decided to check out our vehicle and was literally eyeball to eyeball with Stella. The cheetahs strolling past us. The 8 lions on a fresh kill. The 2 hippos fighting on the bank within 50 yards of our bush breakfast. The giraffe kindergarden. The fish eagles and the goliath herons making catches.

Thank you Ellie , Expert Africa and all those fabulous people in Tanzania, from the taxi driver who picked us up and tried to teach us some Swahili, to the guides and trackers and staff at all the camps who loved their country and wanted us to love it too.

Impala Camp

Impala Camp

"Game viewing straight from the airstrip !"

4 nights Arrived 7 Jul 2013
"Our guide, Andrew, and our tracker, met us at the airstrip and offered us a game drive rather than going straight to camp. Of course, we said "yes please" and saw lion, giraffe, elephants, hippos and crocs before even getting to camp. We were worried that the next 4 days would be a letdown but how wrong we were. Unforgettable experiences piled one on another

I've been on many safari trips before, in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia Ethiopia and Pantanal in Brasil, but this one was the best so far.

For my family, this was their first Africa experience, and I wanted them to see game in its natural surroundings without 50 other vehicles close by and with knowledgable guides who would respond to our questions and would try, within the rules, to comply with our wishes.
Selous is a huge reserve with very few camps and these are all small, so you do get an individual bush experience.
The trails are a bit rough but in return you see animals and birds in their natural habitat and, with luck, very close to. When you are tired of the bouncing in the open-topped Toyota Land Cruiser, you can do a bush-walk or a boat trip or a fishing trip or dip into the small swimming pool in the camp.

we had bush breakfasts every day - an experience in itself. And the sundowners ! Always in stunning locations seeing that red sun sinking under the horizon and driving back in the quiet of the evening gloom.

Masai always accompanied us around the camp, as it was open to the animals and snakes. even so my son couldn't leave his tent for an hour or so one day as he was visited by a baby elephant with its mother."

Kwihala Camp

Kwihala Camp

"Kwihala Camp review"

3 nights Arrived 11 Jul 2013
"Our guide, Tony and his tracker Leverd, met us at the airstrip and we were told that leopard had been spotted ! So we went straight to see it. Fantastic ! Ruaha is a small camp in a remote area so we had wonderful game viewing with a guide who was knowledgable about all we saw, whether it was animals, birds, lizards or insects.

Every day, we could choose whether we had a "bush breakfast" or eat in camp and Andrew was happy to spend as much time as we wanted out on drives. On one occasion we were eating lunch and he was prepared to give up his much-needed rest, to rush out again into the bush as leopard had been spotted .On another, when we were having our sundowners out in the bush, he spotted vultures on the ground about a hundred metres across the canyon and he said "let's forget the sundowners and we'll go and check it out " So we hopped in the land rover and just as we did, two cheetahs strolled past. How cool is that !

Both Selous and Ruaha gave the four of us an exclusive vehicle and driver and guide so we could choose our preferences - very important for having a great Africa experience"

Ras Kutani

Ras Kutani

"Ras Kutani review"

3 nights Arrived 14 Jul 2013
"We went to Ras Kutani to chill out after wonderful but tiring game viewing. It does exactly what it promises - a luxurious, pampering quiet, beautiful place where there is swimming, beachcombing and the soothing sounds of the ocean. No discos, floorshows or piped music. Just monkeys chattering in the palm trees and the gentle sound of ice tinkling in the cocktail glasses."
