An exceptional opportunity to reach and explore one of Africa's most remote parks – with the help of one of its best safari guides; in May, June and December 2011 Robin Pope will personally be leading a handful of tiny safaris to witness the amazing wildebeest migration that happens every year in this amazing national park in the extreme west of Zambia.
The dates for these trips are fixed – see below – and it's easily possible to add other trips onto the start or end of this trip – combining Liuwa Plain with a stay elsewhere in Zambia, or travel further afield to Botswana, Zimbabwe or Malawi.
Landing in Lusaka in the morning, you'll connect onto a charter flight to Kalabo (about 90 minutes' flight). On arrival in Kalabo, you'll be met and driven in an open 4WD for the approximately three-hour drive to Matamanene Camp, deep in the heart of Liuwa Plain National Park. This will be your base for 4 nights of exploring on foot and by 4WD. Your guide for this whole trip will be Robin Pope – one of Africa's leading safari guides – and he has no fixed itinerary. It's really time to explore and discover more about this amazing park.
Today you will either be (in Nov/Dec) driven back to Kalabo, or (in May/June) taken by boat across the wide Zambezi floodplain to Mongu. From there, your charter flight will take you to Lusaka to connect with a flight to South Luangwa. On arrival in South Luangwa, you'll be met and taken to Robin Pope Safaris' Nkwali Camp, which is approximately an hour's drive away. This will be your base for a further 4 nights.
After a morning's activity and a delicious brunch, you'll be transferred back to Mfuwe Airport for a 60-minute flight in the afternoon back to Lusaka. There you'll be met by a courtesy vehicle to take you back for a short over-night stop at the charming Pioneer Camp.
Getting up early in the morning, you will be driven to Lusaka Airport as the city wakes up, arriving in time to connect with your direct flight back to London Heathrow with British Airways. You arrive back into Heathrow in the late afternoon – refreshed after a superb and adventurous trip to Zambia.
