Mchanga Beach Lodge review

Thomas and Gloria have created the most exquisite and comfortable beach lodge overlooking the Indian Ocean. They are both charming, considerate and warm and we had a fantastic time here.

This beach lodge is a real gem, quite and beautiful.

Paradise.......

This was above expectation, on the beach, quiet, spotlessly clean, food excellent and the staff great and willing to please at all times
The sand was like white talcum powder, I felt very safe and relaxed at all times.

Gloria and Thomas made us very welcome and walked around the guests each evening to check all was ok, a great personal touch!

The only slight disappointment was that the bar closed at 10pm, great for enforced rest but would have been nice to sit up later with the other guests and chat a while, but it did not detract from the a beautiful place that I would revisit and recommend.

A great place to relax

Really relaxed atmosphere, lots of little extras such as the early morning tea outside the room and the basket with beach wraps and towels.

Didn't like the palm tree branch that fell on me whilst I was sunbathing and the ineffective air conditioning in the room.

The white sands of Mchanga

Thomas and Gloria welcomed us to their ideal little world of luxury - a beautifully designed lodge - just what was required after a tented safari at Lake Manze. We chilled on the sun loungers and just soaked up the sun for 3 days.

Our hosts were very helpful, and nothing was too much trouble - their staff were really friendly and the cooking was truly excellent.

Mchanga Beach Lodge review

Our rooms at Mchanga had bug problems.

The beach it was on had lovely sand, but hard to swim in the water since there was a lot of seaweed and coral reef.

Probably would not stay there again.

Mchanga Beach Lodge review

A lovely, quiet lodge that has been designed to make the most of it's exquisite location. There is not much to do, but doing nothing has never felt quite so good.

It is not luxury but it is very, very nice.

The only downsides are the shock of seeing the poverty in Zanzibar and in the neighbouring vilage on the way to the lodge, and the fact that the toilet does smell a bit but you stop noticing it after a couple of hours.

The food was very nice as were the staff.

Great atmosphere, people & food!

We had no idea what to expect when we arrived at Mchanga, but the whole experience definitely exceeded any expectations that we had of how the place would be and how much we'd enjoy our time there.

Mchanga is perfect for anyone who would like to get away from it all, be in a serene environment, have good food and have access to all that Zanzibar offers. We stayed in Sea View Lodge #2 (personally think that it has the best view!), and it was such a simple yet complete lodge - with little things making all the difference; like large water bottles left for us and bed decorated with lilies every day.

The thing that surprised us the most was the food - it was absolutely delicious! We looked forward to each breakfast, lunch and dinner with joy - the flavours were amazing, and the variety of food on offer was great too. We kept telling the owners that if their chef had a cook book or offered cooking lessons in the afternoon, we would've signed up! The only feedback we'd give is that the dinner portions were massive, and we often struggled to eat all the food we were given. Half the amount on our plates for the main course would have usually sufficed.

Apart from enjoying the food, we really enjoyed being taught how to play Bao by the friendly staff, going for walks on the beach (where we were the only ones on the beach at times!), and just lounging around and relaxing. We were in Zanzibar primarily to get out PADI license, so we linked up with the nearby PADI centre at Azanzi and the whole underwater experience was great!

All the staff at Mchanga were wonderful and welcoming. Gloria & Thomas were always on hand and very helpful - they confirmed our dive days and pick up times, which was really helpful. They have a wonderful and well-behaved dog which we were really fond of, but we only saw her a couple of times a day as she hangs around the reception area. As for the staff - they were all brilliant. Mohammed and Hamis deserve a special mention as they made us feel really welcome and at home! Hamis also taught us how to play Bao, so we're very grateful!

We can't think of anything that we didn't enjoy about our stay, it was just pefect and what we needed: a calm and relaxing place with easy access to the water! If someone is looking for a large resort with all the mod cons, then this is not the place for them...

We think that whatever literature we read about Mchanga prior to our arrival definitely undersold the place and our experience - it's a really superb place and we wish them every success in the future! I would definitely recommend it!

A beautiful hotel

Mchanga is a lovely little hotel in a beautiful setting. The hotel is attrctively designed for the surroundings and is full of brightly coloured flowers and waving palm trees.

The owners are very friendly and helpful - whatever you need they will try to help. The staff too were excellent - very friendly and willing to chat about themselves and the island. So it was interesting.

The room was fine. It looked very attractively decorated in blue and white. But there were a couple of minor issues. It had no windows, just vents. So while it had air conditioning that could not work all that well, although it did keep the bed area cool -which was the main thing. Perhaps again because of the vents, it had a bit of an odd damp smell in the room; I suppose to be expected in the humidity. But the result of this was that the room was not a particularly attractive place to go for a siesta during the day. It did not really matter; but it is sometimes nice to get inside away from the heat.

The sea was beautiful for swimming, except when it was out and was too far away to get to.

We were fairly lazy when we were at Mchanga. We did go on a day trip snorkelling out to the reef. It was brilliant. We thought of going twice but could not face the drive along the most dreadful road, if you could even call it a road! We also went to Stone Town for an afternoon. It was not too far and Gloria arranged a car for us.

The food was delicious at Mchanga and had lots of local fish and fruits and vegetables that we had never heard of. It was great to try all these.

Mchanga Beach Lodge review

We absolutely loved everything about Mchanga. Gloria and her staff were brilliant - very friendly and helpful at all times. The atmosphere was very laid back, relaxing and quiet - just what we needed to round off our honeymoon.

The food was really delicious - always plenty of it, sufficient choice and freshly prepared to order. I also developed an addiction to the coconut juice drinks the bar served!

The rooms are simple but that's part of their attraction. And all the little touches really make the stay - e.g. sarongs to use while there, tea waiting for you in the morning when you wake (with homemade biscuits), afternoon tea & coffee (with more homemade biscuits!), plenty of drinking water provided in the rooms, etc. etc. etc.!!!

We would definitely recommend it to couples looking for a quiet and beautiful place to relax.
