Spurwing Island: Our full report
In the middle of the beautiful Lake Kariba, overlooked by the majestic Matusadona mountains, tranquil Spurwing Island is a great place for wildlife and fishing enthusiasts.
Spurwing Island consists of 20 twin units. All rooms have an en-suite bathroom with hot water, a veranda with scenic views over Lake Kariba and the Matusadona Mountains and are equipped with mosquito nets, insect spray and insect repellent. The accommodation ranges in size from tented rooms to cabins and chalets. Two of the tents can be joined together to form one large family tent.
The communal area of Spurwing Island consists of a bar, a dining room, a swimming pool with a view of Lake Kariba, and a gift shop selling sun cream, camera film, hats, T-shirts and postcards. The dining room is centrally located, built under thatch with open sides. It offers full English breakfasts, cold buffet lunches and a set menu for the evening meal. A full bar is available, which also has a stunning view over the lake and the Matusadona Mountains.
There is a wide range of game viewing activities available at Spurwing Island, including game spotting on water, on foot, and by vehicle. The game viewing excursions run three times a day. Game drives by vehicle involve taking a boat to Matusadona National Park mainland, and then boarding a seven-seater landrovers for the game drive itself. Walking safaris in Matusadona National Park led by professional guides are also available, which also involve taking a boat from Spurwing Island to Matusadona National Park.
Game viewing from the water is a different experience to wildlife watching on land. Cruises by speedboat or converted pontoon take place along the shores of Lake Kariba. Cruises usually take place in mid-morning so that you can see game such as elephants drinking at the water's edge, and crocodiles sunbathing on the lake shore. Cruises are also available in the evening, when you can watch the beautiful Kariba sunset with a sundowner. Scenic trips by speedboat include an excursion to Sanyah River Gorge. Hiking trips are also available.
Fishing trips where tigerfish and kariba bream can be caught are also possible. The chef will even prepare your catch for you so that you can eat it, if you wish. Unique to Lake Kariba is a forest of dead trees which is home to a variety of nesting and roosting birds.

Children
Generally recommended for children: We don't recommend Spurwing Island for children under the age of about 16 – and no children under the age of 16 are allowed on walking safaris. Activities are very limited for youngsters in between guided safari activities.
Notes: The openness of this safari camp means that big game is likely to pass through, so any children must be under parental supervision at all times.
