Side-striped Jackal Safari

Get an in-depth experience of Zimbabwe’s colossal Hwange National Park, staying at two experience-focused camps with excellent guiding in contrasting areas. An adventurous safari for the real enthusiast.

Side-striped Jackal Safari: Summary

Side-striped Jackal Safari in a nutshell

Hwange’s vast wilderness has much to discover. Comfortably larger than Northern Ireland at 14,600km², ranging from the eastern fringes of the Kalahari Desert to woodland, rolling hills, open grassland and seasonal wetlands, it’s among the most biodiverse national parks in Africa. With the right camps and guides, Hwange is an incredibly exciting safari destination that keeps us coming back for both its wildlife and palpable sense of wilderness.

This six-night safari explores contrasting areas split evenly between two camps, both owned by a top Zimbabwean professional guide David Carson. Whether on foot or in a vehicle, it is all about the safari experience, with a flexible, knowledgeable and charismatic teams making for an unforgettable stay far from the often rigid schedules more traditionally luxury lodges offer.

The first stay is at Camp Hwange. Surrounded by Kalahari sandveld, wildlife viewing in its private 50km2 concession is excellent and you can often watch animals such as Hwange's huge herds of elephants come to drink at the camp’s waterhole while relaxing between activities.

Next head to the remote north of the park where Hwange Bush Camp is tucked away in the rugged hills that make it such a fantastic spot for walking safaris. Tents are traditional and a little rustic, but once again the guiding is top notch. Our own team has had some spectacular encounters here, with tracking packs of wild dog and approaching elephant on foot among the highlights.

Camp Hwange

Days 1-4

In the north-west of Hwange National Park, where the Kalahari's flat plains start to transition into rugged hills, you’ll find Camp Hwange. The camp combines a distinct "bush" feel with an emphasis on the safari experience and top guiding.

Hwange Bush Camp

Days 4-7

The successor to Hwange Mobile Camp, the semi-permanent Hwange Bush Camp, is tucked away in the remote northern region of Hwange National Park. It’s a more rugged environment than the Kalahari sandveld that dominates the rest of the park, with some great wildlife, and the hilly terrain makes for interesting walking safaris led by top Zimbabwean professional guides.
