In its 21st-century incarnation, the Weinberg Estate amounts to a luxurious self-contained village, with most amenities that you could need without having to venture into the city centre.

Enjoy a few hours of pampering and relaxation at the Soulstice Spa or a refreshing swim in its outdoor pool; settle down with a glass of wine in the library; sample the local cuisine at one of five restaurants on the estate; or take in the views of Windhoek from the Sky Lounge.

The on-site gym has a view too, softening the blow of exercising off those excess pounds, and there's a hair salon to help you prepare for an evening out. The estate even has its own ATM.

And then there are the rooms. Just 41 of them make up this unusual hotel, in six different styles – some with views, some with kitchenettes (did we mention the on-site delicatessen?), some split level – and all very comfortable indeed. With so many options, the Weinberg works for individuals, couples, even families; what more could you ask? See our full report on Weinberg Hotel

This Zannier Hotels property ticks all the luxe boxes: glinting azure infinity pool, which sets off the surrounding orange-green savannah beautifully; cutesy thatched roof gin bar, repping plenty of local brands; and a sweeping beige, gunmetal-grey and aquamarine colour scheme peppered with wood and metal furnishings and plenty of glossy design magazines.

Little it may be, but this intimate lodge deep in the Okavango still packs quite a punch. From its remote island hideaway, Little Vumbura looks out across the private Vumbura Reserve. With seasonal floodplains criss-crossed by permanent channels, and drier areas punctuated by tracts of woodland, this is an exceptionally varied area.

Key to its appeal is that diversity, which attracts a phenomenal range of wildlife – from big cats and wild dog to elephant and vast herds of buffalo.

It also opens the door for land and water activities, be it a gentle paddle in a mokoro or a leisurely motorboat trip, a guided walk or a full-on 4WD game drive. And if that’s not enough, consider fishing, or even a scenic flight.

Back at camp, lofty roofs rising up from tented structures are redolent of a circus big top – while enhancing the feeling of light and space. Brilliant blue décor defines the lounge – as well as the ceramic basins in each smart but comfortable chalet.

Barely ten minutes’ walk from the fabled Victoria Falls, Ilala is perfectly placed to marvel at nature’s grandeur. Whether you visit on your own, or join a guided tour booked through the hotel’s activity centre, the Falls are unmissable!

Proximity to the Falls doesn’t make Ilala remote; in fact, it's even closer to the small town of Victoria Falls. Yet the setting is far from urban, with sweeping lawns dotted with mature golden laburnums, their shade welcome in the heat of the day.

The hotel remains family owned, and despite an increase in size it retains a “lodge” atmosphere. Its 73 air-conditioned rooms and suites offer plenty of choice, their crisp white linen offset by dark wood giving a colonial feel. Each has patio doors that open either onto a veranda or balcony, and every room has a view.

Making the most of the setting are umbrella-shaded sunloungers around a sparkling swimming pool, with a cocktail bar just arm’s reach away.
