Black Kite Fly-in Safari: In full
Kenya’s remarkable diversity of ecosystems is one of its most outstanding features. This rewarding safari takes in three of the country’s most iconic regions. After a day at the lovely Emakoko in Nairobi National Park, you’ll spend three days exploring the little visited Meru National Park , east of Mount Kenya. Then you’ll travel to southwest Kenya to spend three days in the fabled Maasai Mara ecosytem, on the trail of big cats and dozens of other species. And you'll finish the safari with three days in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro.
To experience the Maasai Mara's great migration, a good time to take this trip is around August and September, when the migratory wildebeest herds take over the plains.
After your safari, if you want to spend time relaxing on Kenya's coast, it's easy to add one of our beach add-on trips to the Indian Ocean beaches to your itinerary.
Your first day's stay is at The Emakoko, a luxury safari lodge overlooking a gorge on the south side of Nairobi National Park. Rest up by the pool and watch the birdlife and other fauna, or take a game drive through the park to the elephant orphanage, or go in search of rhinos and big cats.
After being transferred through Nairobi National Park to Wilson Airport, you fly past the flanks of Mount Kenya to spectacular Meru National Park on the remote and lush east side of the mountain. Based at the stunning Elsa's Kopje lodge you'll make morning and evening drives through this beautiful park on the trail of cheetah, buffalo, elephant, black rhino and dozens of other species. The lodge's stunning infinity pool is the perfect place from which to scan the landscape during the hot midday hours.
From Meru, you fly again, this time to the southwest, leaving the highlands and crossing the Great Rift Valley before landing at a bush airstrip. A driver/guide from Elephant Pepper Camp will meet you and drive you back to camp for lunch (pausing to watch any interesting denizens of the Mara that you come across en route). For the next three days the wildlife spectacle of the Maasai Mara will unfold around you as you explore the relatively quiet Mara North Conservancy. You'll have the option of making a full-day trip into the Maasai Mara National Reserve during the course of your 3-night stay.
Flying out of the Mara eco-system back across the Rift Valley, you change planes at Nairobi's little Wilson Airport and take another hop south to Amboseli National Park. After checking in at the lovely Tortilis Camp, you'll spend the next three days exploring the plains and swamps of this wildlife-rich region, with the chance, on a clear morning, of catching the unforgettable sight of majestic elephants and graceful giraffe browsing against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.
On your last morning, you could do a final early game drive, before flying back to Nairobi. At Wilson Airport, you could connect onto an afternoon flight to the coast if you want to include a beach stay.
