Purple Grenadier Fly-In Safari

Purple Grenadier Safari: In full

On this outstanding, 4-night safari to one of Kenya's least explored areas, you'll be based just outside the Chyulu Hills National Park at the superb Campi ya Kanzi lodge. Not only will you be wildlife-viewing in the savannah and bush of the barely visited Kuku Group Ranch, but you will also have the opportunity for close engagement with the local Maasai community, for whom the ranch, the lodge and its conservation work are key to their economic future. Above the ranch, in the Chyulu Hills National Park, you can drive and walk up to magical stands of ancient cloud forest on the peaks of the hills, where towering trees shelter a complete ecosystem in total contrast with the plains below.

After your safari, if you want to relax on the beach, then add one of our beach add-on trips to the Kenya coast to your itinerary.

Days 1-4

4 nights at Campi ya Kanzi (full board & activities) | Amboseli and the Chyulu Hills, Kenya

Campi ya Kanzi's success is a result of the close ties between the lodge and the Maasai. After being met from your international flight, you'll be transferred to Nairobi's domestic Wilson Airport for a 30-minute private charter flight in the lodge's light aircraft across Maasailand to Campi ya Kanzi's private airstrip. Make yourself at home in your tented cottage, facing Kilimanjaro, then have lunch. Go out later on a bush walk, a game drive, exploring the local caves. Or just chill on the deck and soak up the view - the choice is yours. You'll have an evening sundowner in the hills, or around the fire-pit on the lounge deck, before dinner with other guests in the beautiful dining room or, on a warm evening, under the stars.

For the next four days, you have the whole of the Kuku Group Ranch to explore, with its diverse wildlife and warm and welcoming Maasai landowners. Find megafauna in the bush, go birdwatching, or visit the local school and clinic. Pay a call on a Maasai homestead and learn about the community's issues and interests, all while being hosted by charming driver-guides from the Kuku community.

Set aside at least one morning or afternoon to visit the Chyulu Hills cloud forest. This fast-disappearing East African high-altitude forest is only found in a few spots in Kenya. The hills' peaks are constantly watered by fluffy clouds, making the forests permanently wet, wreathed in fronds of moss and draped with lianas. Walking among the giant tree trunks with their huge, buttress roots, accompanied by your Maasai guides, is an enchanting experience.

Day 5

On your last morning, after breakfast, fly back in the Campi ya Kanzi plane to Wilson Airport, to transfer to the international airport for your flight home. Alternatively, connect on another domestic flight for the next part of your safari, or fly down to the coast for a stay on the Indian Ocean beaches.
