Solio Game Reserve has the largest single population of white rhino in any protected area in Africa.
Rothschild Giraffe Safari: In full
This luxury, 8-night Kenyan safari includes a stay on Solio Ranch, in the southern part of the highland region of Laikipia followed by four days on the fabled plains of the Maasai Mara National Reserve at a remote bush camp on the Tanzanian border. You'll begin the safari with a stay at the delightful Giraffe Manor, close to Nairobi National Park, and have close encounters with the gentle Rothschild giraffes for which the lodge is a special sanctuary.
If experiencing the wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara is a priority, then the best time to do this safari would be August or September when the vast herds of wildebeest seek pasture on the rich soils of this region.
Many travellers want to relax on the beach after the excitements of a safari. It's easy to arrange this by including one of our beach holidays to Kenya's to Indian Ocean coast at the end of your itinerary.
Your check-in at Giraffe Manor is 11am, giving you time to look around the beautiful grounds before lunch, and probably meet some of the Rothschild giraffes that live here. After lunch you can visit the Giraffe Centre itself, explore the crafts shops and sights of this leafy part of southwest Nairobi, or visit Nairobi National Park for a late afternoon game drive and sundowner.
After saying goodbye to the giraffes, your first safari flight is a short hop north (around 1 hr), between the dramatic highlands of the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya to the little airfield at Nanyuki. A vehicle from Solio Lodge will be here to meet you and drive you back to the magnificent lodge for lunch on the lawn. After lunch and for the next three days, you will have the wildlife riches of the Solio Game Reserve, with its rhinos, lions and other wildlife to explore. As well as game drives, you can go out on horseback, do a bush walk, or take an all-day excursion into the high peaks of the Aberdare range with its waterfalls, colobus monkeys and bongo antelope.
From Solio, you'll return to Nanyuki airport for the dramatic flight south-west out of the highlands and across the Great Rift Valley to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Landing at a bush airstrip in the middle of the reserve you'll be met by a driver and 4x4 vehicle from Sala's Camp, and driven back to camp, over the rolling hills and plains, specked with wildlife, in time for a late lunch. You'll stay four nights at this bush camp on the banks of the Sand River, rising early to go out in quest of elephant and cheetah, leopard and buffalo, returning to camp for the hot hours of the day, and game driving again in the late afternoon.
After a last game drive and late breakfast you fly back across the Great Rift Valley to Nairobi, leaving around 10am, arriving around usually before midday. You can connect to a flight to the coast to spend a few tranquil days by the Indian Ocean. Or spend the rest of the day in Nairobi with a vehicle and driver at your disposal, before driving to the international airport for your flight home.
