This great-value 9-night safari offers a combination of environmentally friendly safari accommodation with wonderful wildlife areas in Laikipia and the Maasai Mara. The safari begins with a 3-night stay on El Karama ranch, northwest of Mount Kenya and the chance to choose game drives or bush walks with an experienced guide, seeking elephants, lions and other species. You then travel south, flying across the Rift Valley to the Mara Naboisho Conservancy where you’ll be guided by experienced Maasai warriors and elders.
The great migration in the Maasai Mara is a phenomenon you can witness on this safari if you travel in August or September, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest roam the region in search of pasture.
After your safari, you can relax on the beach by including one of our beach holidays to the Kenya coast in your itinerary. Beach-time is a great way to relax after the more energetic time spent on safari.
After you have been met and transferred from the international airport, your first safari flight from Nairobi's Wilson Airport flanks Kenya's central highlands and lands at Nanyuki airport (1–1½hrs), on the slopes of Mount Kenya. You'll be met here by a driver and then travel north for about an hour through part of Kenya's beef and cereal country to El Karama Ranch on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro. You'll have the rest of the day, and two complete further days, to explore the ranch on foot with a guide or in a vehicle – usually having the area largely to yourself – with most of East Africa's plains wildlife present in good numbers.
Leaving El Karama, you'll be driven to Nanyuki Airport for your flight to the Maasai Mara, where a Basecamp guide will meet you and take you back to spectacularly sited hillside camp for lunch. Later in the afternoon, and for the next three days, you'll be able to explore the bushy hillsides and plains of the Mara Naboisho Conservancy, where all the Mara ecosystem megafauna, including elephants, giraffe, lion and buffalo, can be seen in abundance. Some of the tent verandas at Basecamp Eagle View have outstanding views across the remote valley, and many guests are happy just to sit and absorb the tranquil environment.
On your last morning you'll drive to the airstrip – wildlife-watching en route – before taking a flight back to Nairobi (around 1½hrs). At Wilson Airport you can connect onto an afternoon flight to the coast, if you're continuing your holiday on the beach, or simply continue with your own private travel arrangements.
