Desert Homestead Outpost review

Our view: 9/10. A wonderfully isolated place overlooking an enormous plain with large hills behind. An interesting ‘sundowner’ platform but a steep path to get to it and very windy at the top. Very good room, a good size, modern, well appointed. Dim lighting in room. Pool area was very nice and food very good. Service was very good. Good WiFi but only at reception. Bed too hard. Best so far, and there was only us and another couple staying! We were there in March.

Desert Homestead Outpost review

This is a fantastic desert camp near Sesriem (40 minutes drive to the national park gate). 7km off the road in a stunning location.

The tents were beautifully and luxuriously decorated with fantastic views from the two decks and outdoor shower (there is an indoor shower too). The lodge and pool were beautifully designed and relaxing.

Food was excellent and the staff were lovely. We had oryx walking past our tents. A convenient place to visit Sossuvlei.

We also did an evening sunset drive to see the scenery on site.

Great base to go to Sossusvlei

Desert Homestead outpost is typical of many Namibian lodges - good location (a bit of a drive from the main road), well appointed room with a view, warm welcome, a sundowner spot, and a nice dinner and breakfast.

The lodge do a trip to the dunes which we only took to let someone else do the driving, but the guide was knowledgeable and had full access to all the various locations. Recommended.

We had a couple of problems while we were there - a slow puncture which they reinflated before we had noticed it ourselves and then guided us to the nearest repair centre, and we left a Kindle behind which they sent on to us, having contacted the local agents to get our itinerary. Great service!

A hidden gem

This was our favourite lodge. The publicity says it enjoys a stunning location, and this is absolutely true. It is 7.5 km from the nearest road out of sight of all other signs of human habitation, looking across to attractive distant hills. We thought we couldn't get further away from 'civilisation'; where we could almost ‘hear’ the silence, and see the stars in all their nighttime glory.

The wonderful location is backed by the superb level of service, friendly, helpful, well thought out. We appreciated too, the way that the individual chalets blended into the landscape and maximised one’s enjoyment of the view and, also, how the management have sought to impose as little damage on the environment as possible with virtually all the electricity coming from solar panels with battery back up, and all hot water from solar radiators.

It is 40 km to the park entrance to visit Sossusvlei which opens at sunrise and where, for an hour or so afterwards, the dunes look their most impressive. We had anticipated driving there ourselves but were pleased we chose to go. with 7 others. with the tour offered by the lodge, and got to the gate in plenty of time. We wish Chris and Lauren every success. A wonderful place.

Fabulous place and in easy reach of the dunes

Such an incredible place. We LOVED it. Such a peaceful setting and within easy reach of the dunes but a wonderful haven to return to. We wish we could have stayed longer.

The couple managing here were genuine and very helpful. We did have a problem with the windows in one of the rooms which was a shame. They were waiting for material to replace them but it meant that the window was fixed closed which stopped the air flow. The manager sadly thought he'd mended it but it was the wrong room!

We did the trip to Sussessvlei from here with Simon. He was very knowledgable, pointing out lots we would have missed if we'd tried to do the trip on our own and we were very well looked after. The trip even included a picnic on a table at the dunes.

We also went to Desert Homestead to do a sundowner ride. (We were glad we chose "Outpost" even though it was a 7km drive off the main road). The horses were well looked after and the guides who accompanied us good fun. We were glad we chose to do the riding here, as the scenery was lovely and we wouldn't have had the opportunity later in our stay. It did mean we had a busy day, Sussessvlei early and a late ride!

Desert Homestead Outpost, Superior Unit stay

Wonderful stay in the Superior Unit: spacious, very private, felt like our own desert palace, at quite a distance from the main lodge however.

We choose the all in package which included all meals and drinks and two private excursions: a sundowner and a day tour to Sossusvlei.

Our guide Simon did an excellent job on both occasions and shared a wealth of knowledge about life in the dessert, showing us little details about plants and animals that really make you understand how special this area is.

Tranquil location

A beautiful property but the location was a bit too far from Sossusvlei for my taste. It was a very long drive to get to the dunes.

We were in Chalet 8. The view was great but it had limited clothes storage facilities and was quite a walk from the main building.

Breakfast was good but the service was slow and on the second morning was a bit slapdash. For example the woman who opened up (slightly late) for breakfast didn't say anything, she didn't leave any milk with the cereals and I had to plug in the toaster myself. Small points I know but telling ones for the quality of accommodation it promotes itself as being.

Fabulous and unique location

Desert Homestead Outpost is beautiful - the scenery with nothing man made for miles around was beautiful. The tented cabins were amazing with great views from the balcony and a roof terrace which we laid on to watch the stars. We got a personal welcome and tour from the manager on arrival, who was really friendly and welcoming.

The main building was lovely with a nice restaurant and viewing deck for sundowner drinks. We didn't use the pool (too cold!) but the pool area looked great too. The five course evening meal was excellent, with a choice of two main meals.

It is remote (20mins off the main gravel road on a very windy gravelly track) but that was the beauty of it. Highly recommended.

Desert Homestead Outpost review

We stayed in the fancy room which was INCREDIBLE. It was beautifully furnished and the private pool was something else.

The hospitality was above and beyond, and our guide Simon was a very funny, knowledgeable, charming character. We were able to book lovely activities, including a day trip out to Deadvlai and Sossusvlei.

The jogging trail disappeared and we almost got lost, but it is such beautiful scenery that we didn't really mind. It is so remote and so quiet that you feel like you own the world.
