Discover for yourself the highlights of Namibia on this extensive self-drive trip, from the majesty of the Fish River Canyon in the deep south to the fertile Zambezi Region. Then finish with a flourish in Botswana’s famed Chobe National Park.

Your 25-day adventure also takes in the iconic dunes of Sossusvlei, the coastal town of Swakopmund with its German architecture and ambience, and Namibia’s premier wildlife destination, Etosha National Park. Along the way there are mountains and deserts, rivers and remote parks – and the ancient rock engravings at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Twyfelfontein.


Day 1

1 night at Hilltop Guesthouse (bed & breakfast) | Windhoek, Namibia

With some truly spectacular views...On arrival into Windhoek Airport, collect your hire car then drive about 45 minutes into the city. Spend the rest of the day exploring the Namibian capital of Windhoek, and relax in the peaceful surroundings of Hilltop Guesthouse, where you'll spend your first night.

Day 2

1 night at Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge (half board) | Southern Namibia, Namibia

Kalahari Red Dunes is located just east of the main B1 road,...From Windhoek, start exploration of this varied country with a drive south towards the edge of the vegetated Kalahari Desert. Enjoy a night at Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge, perhaps with a hike, a scenic drive or even some mountain biking on the afternoon of your arrival.

Days 3-4

2 nights at Fish River Lodge (half board) | Fish River Canyon, Namibia

Fish River Lodge is perched on the edge of ...A lengthy drive of at least six hours will take you to the far south of Namibia and to the edge of the largest canyon in Africa, Fish River Canyon. The chalets of Fish River Lodge must occupy one of the most impressive locations in the country, seemingly perched on the edge of this great canyon. For extra cost experience the canyon on a guided drive, a hike or even on one of the lodge's 'fat' bikes. Or simply relax and soak up the immensity of your surroundings, perhaps from the inviting pool or with an on-site massage.

Day 5

1 night at Namtib Desert Lodge (half board) | Southern Namibia, Namibia

Namtib lodge is located in the spectacular Namtib Biosphere Reserve..As you wind your way north from the Fish River Canyon, enjoy a stopover for the night at Namtib Desert Lodge. Situated within the Namtib Biosphere Reserve, this homely lodge has walking trails of between 1km and 5km, and it is also possible to enjoy nature drives and horseriding.

Days 6-7

2 nights at Desert Quiver Camp (accommodation only) | Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia

Desert Quiver Camp is a new modern camp…Continuing north, you’ll come to the small town of Sesriem, close to the entrance of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Two nights in a nearby lodge will give you a full day to visit the iconic dunes surrounding the salt and clay pans of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, and the lesser-known Sesriem Canyon. Driving yourself is very straightforward, but if you prefer you could take part in a guided tour.

Days 8-9

2 nights at Namib Guesthouse (bed & breakfast) | Swakopmund & Walvis Bay, Namibia

We haven't visited Namib Guesthouse yet but we will update our images when we do.From the Sesriem area, it’s a drive of at least five hours across dramatic mountain passes and the northern part of the Namib Desert towards Swakopmund. Keep a look out for the occasional ostrich, oryx or springbok as you pass through this stark environment. Two nights at the Namib Guesthouse near the centre of Swakopmund gives you time to wander around this interesting coastal town or to embark on an adventure such as kayaking with seals, or a 4x4 visit to Sandwich Harbour.

Days 10-11

2 nights at Camp Kipwe (half board) | Damaraland, Namibia

Camp Kipwe blends into the rocky landscape…As you start to head inland from Swakopmund, you are moving north towards the more game-rich areas of this varied country. A couple of nights at Camp Kipwe in Damaraland will give you the chance to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Twyfelfontein, where the nomadic Bushmen have left some extraordinary engravings in the limestone of this rocky outcrop. Make time, too, for a guided nature drive, when you might be lucky enough to spot the desert-adapted elephants that inhabit the region’s ephemeral riverbeds.

Days 12-13

2 nights at Taleni Etosha Village (half board) | Etosha National Park, Namibia

Taleni Etosha Village is located a short drive from Etosha National Park's Andersson Gate.Today you will have your first taste of Namibia's premier wildlife destination, Etosha National Park. Well located just south of the Andersson Gate into this famous park, Taleni Etosha Village allows for easy access to the park, either driving yourself or on a guided activity with the lodge. Depending on the time of your arrival from Damaraland, you may have time to head into the park before checking into the lodge. During the hottest part of the day, when game viewing is not normally at its best, enjoy Taleni's bar and restaurant or perhaps have a dip in the pool.

Days 14-15

2 nights at Namutoni Camp (bed & breakfast) | Etosha National Park, Namibia

Namutoni is home to an old fort, from which it gets its name, built in 1899 as an outpost for German troops.Treat today not as a drive to your next destination but as an all-day game drive in Etosha, ending up at your next camp on the eastern side of the park. The distance is only around 150km (without detours) but factor in stopping for wildlife and visiting the waterholes along the way and this can easily turn into a relaxed full day. With two nights at the government-run Namutoni Camp, you’ll have plenty of time the following day to explore eastern Etosha, too.

Day 16

1 night at Hakusembe River Lodge (half board) | Caprivi Strip, Namibia

Drive out of Etosha's eastern Von Lindequist gate, then head north-east to the bustling town of Rundu. Stop for the night at Hakusumbe River Lodge on the banks of the Kavango River, around 12km west of town. If you have time it’s well worth taking time on the river for a spot of fishing or a sunset cruise.

Days 17-18

2 nights at River Dance Lodge (half board) | Caprivi Strip, Namibia

River Dance Lodge is nestled in riverine forest on the banks of the Kavango River.Head east today into the Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip) 'proper', following the Kavango River. As you drive along the tar road, which is generally in very good condition, you’ll pass through lots of small villages before reaching the small River Dance Lodge on the banks of the Kavango. With two nights here, you could take in a trip on the river, a village tour or even a visit to the Bwabwata National Park.

Days 19-20

2 nights at Nkasa Lupala Tented Lodge (half board) | Caprivi Strip, Namibia

Nkasa Lupala is located on Lupala island in Namibia's Caprivi Strip...As you drive further east and deeper into the Zambezi Region, you’ll come to the remote Nkasa Rupara National Park. Here you’ll have two nights at Nkasa Lupala Tented Lodge, which is built on a channel of the Kwando–Linyanti river system. Water levels permitting, you could opt for a mokoro trip from the lodge, and there are also day and night game drives into the park. Back at the lodge there’s an inviting pool sunk into a large deck, and if you’re lucky, you might spot game wandering through the grounds.

Days 21-22

2 nights at Chobe Elephant Camp (full board & activities) | Chobe National Park, Botswana

Chobe Elephant Camp is situated on the western perimeter of Chobe National Park.oday you’ll cross the Ngoma border into Botswana and head for the small town of Kasane. Here you will return your hire car and then be transferred to your final destination, Chobe Elephant Camp. Set on a ridge on the less-visited western perimeter of Chobe National Park, the camp has extensive views over the Chobe River and its floodplains and back towards the Zambezi Region from where you have just come. From here you’ll be able to take a game drive or boat cruise into the park, whose game densities – and particularly elephant – can be exceptional in the dry season (June to October).

Day 23

After breakfast and depending on your flight times, enjoy a last leisurely morning before being transferred to Kasane Airport to continue with your onward arrangements.
