This self-drive safari follows probably the most popular route around Namibia, it spends 15 days in country and is taking in its main highlights: the dunes, the coast, Damaraland and Etosha. Throughout this, the scenery is spectacular and you’ll be able to stop and explore at your own pace.

It starts in the vast rock-and-sand wilderness of the NamibRand Reserve, stops a little further north in the Namib Desert to explore the great dunes around Sossusvlei, continues to Swakopmund and on to the mountainous Damaraland before some of the continent’s best game-viewing in Etosha National Park.


Day 1

1 night at Elegant Guesthouse (bed & breakfast) | Windhoek, Namibia

The Elegant Guesthouse is situated in the residential area of Klein Windhoek.Collect your hire car when you arrive at Windhoek Airport and set off on the easy 45-minute drive to Namibia's capital of Windhoek. Spend the afternoon mooching around this clean and relaxed African city; maybe shop at the craft stalls or sit in one of the pavement cafes. Then relax for your first night at Elegant Guesthouse.

Days 2-3

2 nights at Wolwedans Dune Camp (full board & activities) | NamibRand Nature Reserve, Namibia

Wolwedans Dune Camp is located amongst the dunes...After a refreshing nights rest you leave on your self-drive trip, heading south-west to the remarkable NamibRand Nature Reserve. Here the Wolwedans Dune Camp is a very lovely, small tented camp standing in the dunes, with stunning views of an almost-untouched area of semi-desert. Activities with your guide are included here with a full-day 4WD trip, including a picnic, always being very popular for your whole-day here.

Days 4-5

2 nights at Kulala Desert Lodge (half board) | Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia

Welcome to Kulala Desert Lodge...A relatively short drive takes you north, along a spectacular drive beside edge of the desert, to within the Namib-Naukluft Park. Drive out to catch the sunrise across the desert, climb one of the world's highest sand dunes at Sossusvlei and explore the depths of Sesriem Canyon. In the late evening, after dinner, relax, if you wish, on a bed made on your chalet's roof allowing the silence of the desert and the stars to lull you to sleep at the lovely Kulala Desert Lodge.

Days 6-7

2 nights at Organic Square (bed & breakfast) | Swakopmund & Walvis Bay, Namibia

The Organic Square Guesthouse is located in the centre of Swakopmund.Drive across the northern section of the Namib-Naukluft Park, through varied landscapes of striking scenery, until you get to the engaging seaside town of Swakopmund. Here there are lots of choices of activities, and you have flexibility: indulge in some of the optional activities on offer such as skydiving, kayaking or sand-boarding. The restaurants, shops and historic buildings are also great to wander around, and there"s a friendly welcome for you at the Organic Square Guesthouse.

Days 8-9

2 nights at Doro Nawas (half board) | Damaraland, Namibia

The main building at Doro Nawas is striking in appearance and perched on top of a small hill...Drive north along the Skeleton Coast before turning inland, and following the road as it winds up into the rolling mountains of Damaraland, where the attractions are easily reached in your own car. You'll find a natural gallery of rock engravings sheltered within the Twyfelfontein valley, strange geological formations at the Organ Pipes and Burnt Mountain, and an interesting Damara cultural village. During the dry months, the ephemeral river valleys here are home to desert-adapted elephants your best chance to see these is by joining an optional guided nature drive offered during your stay at Doro Nawas.

Days 10-11

2 nights at Okaukuejo Camp (bed & breakfast) | Etosha National Park, Namibia

Okaukuejo Camp is found inside the Etosha National Park.Continue north-east, to Namibia's premier game reserve: Etosha National Park: The scenery is mainly open savannah so you often have extensive views. The game here is relaxed, making it a great place for wildlife photography. Spend your days exploring the various roads in your car, sitting quietly by some of the many waterholes, and watching the spectacular wildlife. Then, after dark, there"s nocturnal viewing at the excellent floodlit waterhole beside Okaukuejo Camp.

Days 12-13

2 nights at Mushara Bush Camp (half board) | Etosha National Park, Namibia

Mushara Bush Camp is set on the eastern edge of Etosha National Park.Spend the full day crossing Etosha National Park, discovering more of its game, taking in the empty vastness of Etosha Pan as you drive to the eastern side of the park. From your base on the edge of Eastern Etosha you can explore this side of the park. Each day you'll exit by sunset to return to your lovely accommodation at Mushara Bush Camp.

Day 14

1 night at Erongo Wilderness Lodge (half board) | Central Highlands, Namibia

Erongo Wilderness Lodge sits amongst huge granite whalebacks and boulders in the Erongo Mountains.Leave Etosha, perhaps after an early-morning game-drive, and head south of mainly tarred roads to the majestic Erongo Mountains within Namibia's Central Highlands. This is a totally different landscape for your final night on safari; with dramatic views, a relaxing atmosphere and a variety of guided or self-guided walking trails. It"s an ideal spot to get out of the car and explore on foot before taking your flight tomorrow. The only downside will be leaving the pristine beauty of Erongo Wilderness Lodge. Guided walks are included in your stay here.

Day 15

After a hearty breakfast, bid "goodbye" to the Erongo Mountains and drive straight to Windhoek Airport on mostly very good tar roads. You will probably have time to stop at one of the huge craft markets in Okahandja en-route - where you'll find one of Africa's largest ranges of carving and other artworks, sold by local artisans and traders. Finally you'll arrive back in Windhoek to drop off your hire car ready for your own onward arrangements from there.
