Created specifically with keen walkers in mind, this varied and scenic self-drive safari spends 15 nights in Namibia taking in the magical desert landscapes of the south and the rugged mountain scenery of the Central Highlands. Discover remarkable highlights such as the Southern Kalahari and Fish River Canyon; marvel at the fascinating history and ghost towns of the Sperrgebiet and Luderitz; and be moved by the awe-inspiring Namib Desert whilst on foot with a knowledgeable guide, sleeping out under the stars. Later you can mix bird-watching with walking amidst the impressive Erongo Mountains and the lush Waterberg Plateau.


Day 1

1 night at River Crossing (bed & breakfast) | Windhoek, Namibia

River Crossing is just 15 minutes from Windhoek...Collect your hire car on arrival at Windhoek Airport and drive to your comfortable accommodation set amongst the rolling hills on the outskirts of Windhoek. This afternoon you may like to drive into the city centre to wander around the shops, craft stalls and historic buildings or spend your time relaxing by the pool and enjoying the pleasant bush setting at River Crossing.

Day 2

1 night at Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch (half board) | Southern Namibia, Namibia

Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch is found in the Kalahari...Start with a tasty breakfast before driving south into the scenic reaches of the Southern Kalahari. You'll stay overnight amid the deep red linear dunes of the Kalahari which can be explored on foot at your leisure or on an optional guided nature drive if appeals. Keep a look out for the family of meerkats that live in the vicinity of Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch.

Days 3-4

2 nights at Fish River Lodge (half board) | Fish River Canyon, Namibia

Perched on the edge of Fish River Canyon, within the Canyon Nature Park...Drive south today via the town of Keetmanshoop, where you may like to stop off at the striking Quiver Tree Forest, before continuing on to the western side of the impressive Fish River Canyon. During your two night stay here you can gaze into the depths of the canyon from the comfort of your private veranda, as well as discover the unique flora and fauna on short walks from Fish River Lodge.

Days 5-7

3 nights at Eagle's Nest (half board) | Luderitz, Namibia

The Eagle's Nest is found about 2km from Aus...Cross sprawling desert plains to reach the small settlement of Aus; a historic town perched on the edge of the escarpment. Your remote setting invites you to soak in the surrounding vistas of Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park. It's a place to be active; with a variety of great hiking trails in the vicinity of your base at Klein Aus Vista. You can also venture out in your hire car to see the wild desert horses at Garub and drive to the Atlantic Coast to visit Luderitz and the famous Kolmanskop Ghost Town. Return each night to your secluded chalet at Eagle's Nest.

Day 8

1 night at Dabis Guest Farm (half board) | Southern Namibia, Namibia

Dabis Guest Farm is located not far from Helmeringhausen...It's an extremely scenic drive today along the south-eastern border of the Namib-Naukluft Park and into the Tiras Mountain Conservancy to stay overnight at one of the area's rural guest farms. Here you can experience the lifestyle and homely hospitality of a Namibian sheep farm. There is the option of joining a farm drive if appeals, or you can choose from a number of walking trails amidst the farms stunning scenery. One of our favourite options here is Dabis Guest Farm.

Days 9-10

2 nights at Tok Tokkie Trails (full board & activities) | Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia

Tok Tokkie Trails take you into the huge, private NamibRand Nature Reserve.Continue north to reach the breathtaking NamibRand Nature Reserve where you'll meet your resident guide before setting out on a memorable two night trek into the Namib Desert. Meander through low orange sand dunes at a gentle pace; stopping often to learn about interesting flora and fauna, to shade under a camelthorn tree, or to watch a herd of gemsbok walk by. Exploring the desert environs is enhanced by your expert guide and sleeping on a camp bed under the stars each night is magical whilst on the Tok Tokkie Trails.

Day 11

1 night at Rostock Ritz (bed & breakfast) | Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia

The Rostock Ritz is surrounded by the Namib Desert and has magnificent views.A morning stroll takes you back to your hire car and concludes the walking trail at about midday. Drive north through more striking Namib Desert scenery, via the tiny desert outpost of Solitaire (where the bakery's apple crumble is legendary!), to overnight in the last of your spectacular desert settings. Elevated on a rocky hillside overlooking the vast desert plains, there are more fantastic walking tracks and a great sunset view to be enjoyed from Rostock Ritz.

Days 12-13

2 nights at Erongo Wilderness Lodge (half board) | Central Highlands, Namibia

Erongo Wilderness Lodge sits amongst huge granite whalebacks and boulders in the Erongo Mountains.Today's long but beautiful drive takes you through some of Namibia's most scenic back roads en-route to the rocky haven of the Erongo Mountains. These rugged granite mountains provide shelter to a plethora of plants and animals, including a number of Namibia's endemic bird species. It is an ideal spot to explore their numerous walking trails on your own or with a local guide. There is also an optional guided nature drive offered to visit the small rock painting site at Paula's Cave. Your charming tented accommodation is nestled amongst the boulders at Erongo Wilderness Lodge.

Days 14-15

2 nights at Waterberg Camp (bed & breakfast) | Waterberg Plateau National Park, Namibia

Waterberg Camp is situated at the base of the cliff of the Waterberg Plateau.Begin with a sunrise guided walk or opt for a more leisurely wake up to the sounds of birdcalls and rock hyrax warming up in the sun. From Erongo you drive east through Namibia's Central Highlands, the country's hilly spine, to the Waterberg Plateau. This unique flat-topped plateau is largely made of porous sandstone; sculpted into amazing shapes and fringed by freshwater springs from rainfall. The lush vegetation, colourful cliffs and abundance of birdlife can be discovered on various walking trails along the slopes. An optional guided nature drive into the wildlife reserve that spans the top of the plateau is offered from your base at Waterberg Camp.

Day 16

Set off with plenty of time for the return drive to Windhoek Airport, perhaps stopping at Okahandja or Windhoek craft market to buy some last-minute curios. Arrive at the airport in time to drop off your rental car before connecting with your own onward arrangements.
