This privately guided safari is designed for active nature lovers. It combines kayaking on Lake Kivu with some incredible wildlife experiences - the mountain gorillas and the golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park.

Include:

Day 1

1 night at Cormoran Lodge (full board) | Lake Kivu, Rwanda

Cormoran Lodge is located on the shores of Lake Kivu...On arrival in Kigali, you'll meet your private guide, then drive through the beautiful scenery of Rwanda’s thousand hills towards Kibuye for 3 nights at Cormoran Lodge. Once checked in, you’ll meet your kayaking guides and go through a safety briefing, before heading out for sunset kayaking. Once on the lake, you'll watch and listen to the fishermen leaving for the night. The fisherman sing to keep the paddling rhythm; with the sunset, the lights from the boats, plus the harmonies, it’s particularly beautiful.

Day 2

1 night at Cormoran Lodge (full board) | Lake Kivu, Rwanda

Cormoran Lodge is located on the shores of Lake Kivu...Meet up again with the guides after breakfast and set off from Kibuye out to Lake Kivu’s ‘Bay of Islands’. Stop off on one of the islands for lunch, swimming if you feel like it, then more kayaking. Depending on how far you paddle that day, there's sometimes time to stop off at Napoleon Island (often called Bat Island), with a huge (and noisy!) fruit bat colony.

Day 3

1 night at Cormoran Lodge (full board) | Lake Kivu, Rwanda

Cormoran Lodge is located on the shores of Lake Kivu...Your kayaking today will follow the coastline more, to appreciate the different scenery of the farms and villages along the shore of Lake Kivu. You’ll stop off on a local island or beach for lunch stop.

Day 4

1 night at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (full board) | Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge has a fantastic location...You’ll leave Kibuye for the 3–hour drive north to Volcanoes National Park, for 3 nights at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge. This comfortable lodge is close to the park's boundary, with stunning views of the nearby volcanoes and lovely gardens. It's a perfect base from which to explore the national park.

Day 5

1 night at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (full board) | Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge has a fantastic location...This morning is an early start to track the golden monkeys. These endangered primates are beautiful and more agile than the mountain gorillas. They live in bamboo thickets on the lower slopes of the mountains. Tracking them provides ideal acclimatisation to the slight altitude, before heading higher to the gorillas the next day. The afternoon is free, but your driver is at your disposal, so you might explore the local villages, or drive to a scenic viewpoint looking over the twin lakes of Ruhero and Buhondo.
Canoeing on the Mukungwa River is a great afternoon activity – ask us for details to add this to your trip.

Day 6

1 night at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (full board) | Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge has a fantastic location...Another early start, you’ll meet at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a briefing, where you’ll be allocated your gorilla family group. You’ll hike up into the rainforest to a troop of magnificent mountain gorillas. Each troop has its own 24-hour guard, so their location is known. There is usually a chance to have an hour with them, time to sit and observe them at very close quarters indeed. The trek can be strenuous, but it’s taken at a slow pace – the hike could be anything from 50 minutes to 6 or 7 hours. Once back at the lodge, you’ve got the afternoon free for relaxation, or an optional activity (at extra cost).

Day 7

1 night at Kigali Serena Hotel (bed & breakfast) | Kigali, Rwanda

The Serena is one of Kigali's most luxurious hotels...You’ll leave after breakfast for a leisurely drive back to Kigali, which will incorporate a tour of the city. After lunch you’ll spend a few hours at the Genocide Museum. This is humbling, and harrowing in parts, but a beautifully poignant reminder of Rwanda’s history. You’ll spend 1 night at the Serena Hotel.

It's possible to add an extra gorilla trek to this day - which would mean arriving later into Kigali that day - speak to us about the options.

Day 8

Enjoy your final day in Kigali before heading on to the next section of your itinerary or heading to the airport for your flight home.
