Mountain Gorilla Safari solo

Mountain Gorilla solo: In full

This itinerary illustrates the costs of a short 5 night safari for one person travelling on their own, with the opportunity to track the agile golden monkeys and spend two mornings hiking to find the endangered mountain gorillas - more than half of the world's gorilla population live in the Volcanoes National Park.

A solo traveller will still have the benefit of their own private vehicle and guide for the duration of the trip. They will be able to socialise with other travellers at Gorilla Mountain View Lodge as well as on the treks themselves, however all transfers will be done on an individual basis. We do not offer any group trips to Rwanda.

Include:

Day 1

1 night at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (full board) | Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge has a fantastic location...Your private guide, with his/her 4WD vehicle, meets you on arrival at Kigali Airport, either off an international flight, or after a safari elsewhere in Africa. Leaving the lively capital, you drive north-west through lush hills and bustling market towns for approximately 2 hours, to the stunning Volcanoes National Park – well known as the venue for Dian Fossey's pioneering studies of the mountain gorillas. Your 4-night stay here is based at the Gorilla Mountain View Lodge. This comfortable lodge is close to the park's boundary, with stunning views of the nearby volcanoes and lovely gardens. It's a perfect base from which to explore the national park.

Day 2

1 night at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (full board) | Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge has a fantastic location...This morning is an early start to track the golden monkeys. These endangered primates are beautiful and more agile than the mountain gorillas. They live in bamboo thickets on the lower slopes of the mountains. Tracking them provides ideal acclimatisation to the slight altitude, before heading higher to the gorillas the next day. The afternoon is free, but your driver is at your disposal, so you might explore the local villages, or drive to a scenic viewpoint looking over the twin lakes of Ruhero and Buhondo.
Canoeing on the Mukungwa River is a great afternoon activity – ask us for details to add this to your trip.

Day 3

1 night at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (full board) | Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge has a fantastic location...Another early start, you’ll meet at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a briefing, where you’ll be allocated your gorilla family group. You’ll hike up into the rainforest to a troop of magnificent mountain gorillas. Each troop has its own 24-hour guard, so their location is known. There is usually a chance to have an hour with them, time to sit and observe them at very close quarters indeed. The trek can be strenuous, but it’s taken at a slow pace – the hike could be anything from 50 minutes to 6 or 7 hours. Once back at the lodge, you’ve got the afternoon free for relaxation, or an optional activity (at extra cost).

Day 4

1 night at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (full board) | Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge has a fantastic location...On your final day in the Virunga region, you'll hike to see another troop of inspiring mountain gorillas. The forest paths are generally good during the dry season, but can be challenging when wet; all have steep sections. The troops are spread out: the lower groups are often accessible by a hike of 90 minutes or even less, whilst reaching one of the higher groups can take a strenuous 3-4-hour hike. Once you reach them, they seldom move very far – 1km per day would be typical for a group.

Day 5

1 night at Heaven Boutique Hotel (bed & breakfast) | Kigali, Rwanda

Heaven Hotel offers great value accommodation in downtown Kigali. After a relaxed breakfast and last views of the park's environs, drive for roughly two hours south-east back to Kigali, where you'll check into Heaven Boutique Hotel for one night. Many travellers prefer to relax, rest from the previous days trekking, and enjoy the surrounding area - but chat to us if you'd like to include an additional activity or hike on this last day.

Day 6

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, before being dropped at the airport or continuing on with your own travel arrangements.
