Built in the suburbs of Bulawayo in the 19th century, Nesbitt Castle was the romantic vision of Theodore Holdengarde, an eccentric admirer of the Middle Ages. Once a private home, this gothic-style fortress was widely known as ‘Holdengarde Castle’ until 1990. It is now a quirky hotel with a unique historic ambience yet equipped with modern comforts.
Our view of Nesbitt Castle
While none of the Expert Africa team has stayed at Nesbitt Castle yet, our associates in Zimbabwe have recently visited it (February 2014) and reported back that it has managed to maintain an offbeat, authentically historic and truly romantic feel with very attentive and friendly staff. We think that, due to its location in the suburbs of Bulawayo and its unusual design, Nesbitt Castle makes for a worthwhile stopover on a Zimbabwe trip. Many guests’ comments imply that they were impressed by the grandeur of Nesbitt Castle and very much enjoyed staying here.
