Breezes Beach Club

 - Michamvi Peninsula, Zanzibar
Read 3 traveller reviews of Breezes Beach Club

Breezes Beach Club occupies a lovely stretch of beach along the Michamvi Peninsula on the east coast of Zanzibar. It is an international-style resort that's long been a favourite with honeymooners and families. Being quite large, it has all of the facilities that you would expect from a good European resort hotel, and being relatively large (70 rooms) it has a buzzing atmosphere.

The various restaurants, swimming pool and rooms at Breezes all sit in extensive gardens near the beach and if you wonder slightly further you will find a fantastic spa, floodlit tennis court and a very good dive centre.

We can arrange your stay at Breezes on a full board or a half board rate. We usually recommend the 'half board' rate, as this gives you flexibility over what you eat for lunch, and where you eat it.

There are several restaurants for you to choose from, though if you opt for the 'full board' rate, note that some restaurants charge (often substantial) supplements for lunch and dinner.

That said, breakfast and dinner at the Salama Restaurant ('Salama' means 'peace' in Swahili and Arabic) are included in the all the rates. Breakers Restaurant serves an à la carte lunch menu, most of which is included as part of the 'full board' rate, whereas the Sultan's Table and Tides Restaurant will always command a supplement.

The rooms at Breezes Beach Club vary between the Standard Rooms, Deluxe Rooms, and Suites. All of the rooms are the same in size and décor, though the Deluxe rooms are closer to the sea than the Standard, whilst the Suites are situated on an upper level with a large balcony.

Breezes is a comfortable and professionally run hotel which would be perfect for those traveling with children, or couples looking for a buzzing atmosphere, an array of activities, water-sports and dining options, and a very reasonable price-tag for their beach holiday on Zanzibar.

If you're looking for somewhere that has access to all of the above, but much more exclusive, then consider Palms, next door.

Note that during school holidays – around August and the Christmas / New Year period – it is essential to book Breezes well in advance to get space here.

Lodge overview
Lodge type: Beach
No. of bedrooms: 70 rooms
Season: Open Year Round
Ideal length of stay: Three days or more
Central facilities: Breezes Beach Club is a large resort with an array of common areas to relax in. With an extraordinary number of different bars and restaurants, you are bound to find somewhere that will suit during the daytime and evening.

During the day, the Pool Bar is a comfortable lounging area where you can stay out of the sun and enjoy a cool drink, or head to Breakers Restaurant for a lunch snack. Breakfast and dinner take place in the Salama Restaurant, which is a vast room under thatch with lots of table and a buffet bar. Breezes try to decorate this room with a different theme every night and on occasion there is live traditional music to accompany your evening meal.

If you feel like dining away from the rest of the guests, then the Sultan's Table is a smaller restaurant (it commands a supplement on half and full board rates) serving food with Indian and Swahili inspirations which overlooks the sea. It is a very atmospheric room, with Arabian-style interior décor, sumptuous fabrics and wonderfully carved wooden walls.

For real exclusivity, then the beachside Tides Restaurant is a table for two set away from the main dining areas. Sitting in your own Arabian style open sided room, with an uninterrupted view out over the sea and excellent service it is very romantic (we would recommend that this is booked in advance).

In the evening retire to the Safari Bar for a few after dinner drinks, or to the Baraza Bar which is a liqueur and cigar bar (this is the only place in Breezes where guests are permitted to smoke).

To keep you occupied throughout your stay Breezes Beach Club has a pool, a movie room, a tennis court, a shopping bazaar, a water-sports centre and a fitness centre. It also has one of the finest spas on Zanzibar with an international team from Thailand, Eastern Europe, Kenya, Bali and India. The Frangipani Spa was inspired in design by the Sultan's bath houses from the days of Arab rule in Zanzibar - the result is very atmospheric. The spa also offers detoxifying & hydrating therapies, two Jacuzzis, a steam room, yoga and meditation as well as a variety of massages.

Food & drink
Usual board basis: Half Board
Food quality: There are four different dining areas at Breezes so there is plenty of variety, though not all of the restaurants can be used on the full board basis. Breakfast is always served in the Salama Restaurant in a buffet style and includes a variety of fresh fruits, cereals and a full English breakfast.

The full board lunch is then served in the relaxed poolside Breakers Restaurant which offers an a la carte menu with most items included. Though guests on half board can also eat here for an extra charge. The Sultan's Table is a more formal restaurant with Indian and Swahili influenced food – this restaurant always commands a supplement, though guests on a full board rate do get a 15% discount.

For dinner you can head to the Salama Restaurant for a 5-course meal, or for a substantial supplement dine in the Sultan's Table. There is also the Tides Restaurant which is exclusive dining for two right next to the beach in a small gazebo. This also commands a supplement and it should be booked in advance.

When we last visited Breezes, we did not have a chance to sample the food. However, on previous visits it has been very good – with plenty of seafood, fresh salads and vegetables and a real mix of international cuisine. It's particularly notable because lunch and dinner are usually cooked, plated and served separately to order, rather than as a buffet (as is the norm in many larger beach hotels) – and the quality is consequently higher.
