The Z Hotel, set in a landscaped, tropical garden with direct access onto a beach, opens in December 2007 in Nungwi town, in the far north of Zanzibar.

We haven't seen this hotel yet, but we're told that it will have 35 'boutique style' bedrooms, all finished to high spec by a team of architects and interior designers. The furniture will be made from locally-sourced coconut wood, exclusive to the Z Hotel, and all rooms will have a garden, beach or sea view.

It will also have its own beach bar – Bwana Billy's, 'Cinnamon' cocktail bar and its own restaurant that will serve African-European fusion cuisine.

Z Hotel will be able to organise activities for you during your stay – day trips to around Stone Town, Spice Tour and Jozani Forest amongst others. They have a dive centre on site and will arrange deep-sea fishing and sunset cruises. In 2008 they are hoping to open a spa, gym and a water sports area… watch this space.

As Z Hotel is only opening this month, we haven't yet seen it. We will also have to wait until we get some feedback of the service, feel of the place and quality of it until we can give it a truly accurate write-up. From the few photographs of it that we've seen, it looks as though it will be a chic and elegant hotel with good facilities.

Unusual for a new hotel, they have quite a range of different room types:

Superior Room These are situated on the ground and 1st floors of the hotel and have views over the landscaped gardens or the sea. We're told they will be stylishly decorated and have tea/coffee making facilities, mini bar, safe and hair dryer – and should also have their own private deck.

Deluxe Room These should have all the facilities of the superior room, plus a plasma satellite TV, a DVD player and are located on the 2nd floor. They all are said to have sea views too!

Family Suite These are planned to be on the 1st/2nd and 3rd floors of the hotel, and are only scheduled to open sometime early in 2008. These should each have 2 bedrooms – 1 with a king size bed, the other with two twin beds – and a living area. A play station, plasma and satellite TV, a selection of board games and a DVD player are planned for each family room – as are a private deck overlooking the garden, beach or sea. These rooms have been designed to accommodate 2 adults and 2 children.

Roof Top Suite The roof top suites will be on the 3rd floor of the Z Hotel. As well as having all the amenities of a deluxe room, an outside shower, a plasma satellite TV, a DVD player, a sitting area and a private deck overlooking the garden/coast line or the sea are all planned. This suite is designed for 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children.

Honeymoon Suite Z Hotel tell us that they have placed this suite over the entire roof top of the hotel. It will include the same facilities as the roof top suite plus a lounge area complete with cocktail bar, a king-size bed and an outside shower and Jacuzzi – so we're expecting quite a place here!!

It should have views over the sea and sounds as though it will be very stylish. This suite should be available from early 2008.

Cottages There are plans for two ocean fronted cottages, built on the side of a cliff and arranged over two floors. They will be totally separate from the rest of the accommodation at the Z Hotel – and furnished with a king-size bed and their own kitchenette. An en-suite wet room is planned for the bedroom, on the first floor, and an outdoor shower is promised. To top it all off, we're also told there will be a floating deck from where you can soak up the sun as you listen to the lapping waves!
