Wolwedans Dune Camp is the more economic and simpler sister-camp to the lovely Wolwedans Dune Lodge and the luxurious Boulders Camp. Dune Camp sits on the edge of a 250m high dune on the NamibRand Reserve and it is a favourite of ours.
Wolwedans Dune Camp has just six spacious tents built on individual wooden decks above the dune. Each is furnished with a large double bed or twin beds draped in a mosquito net, matching bedside tables with solar-powered lamps and a luggage rack. The tent's canvas windows roll-up to reveal spectacular desert views and allows cooling air to flow through the room. The front deck is large enough to create a roomy private sitting area during the day with space for a 'star' bed to be made up for the night. Sleeping under the desert skies as an amazing and romantic experience and we recommend you request it if visiting Wolwedans during the summer months (September to April).
Although the tents are not en-suite, each has its own spacious private bathroom a short walk away and part of the deck structure. The bathrooms are constructed of wood and canvas and have a shower, flush toilet and his and hers basins. The deep velvety wood and desert dune colours are matched by those of the fabrics and fluffy towels in each bathroom whilst complimentary soaps and lotions add a touch of luxury.
The main area, or Lapa at Wolwedans Dune Camp comprises of a lounge fitted with interesting antique-style furniture, small bar and open-plan kitchen where guests are invited to chat to the chef whilst he is preparing dinner. Meals are served around one long dining table set under candle lit chandeliers creating a really relaxed and cosy atmosphere. The extended deck is fitted with a camp fire surrounded by canvas director's chairs where guests can enjoy pre and post dinner drinks whilst getting to know like minded travellers.
Activities offered at Wolwedans Dune Camp focus on every aspect of the surrounding landscapes, all of which form part of the oldest desert in the world. As well as morning and afternoon nature drives, there are full-day safaris including a picnic lunch which take visitors deep into the heart of the NamibRand Reserve. The guides here are very informative and will really bring the seemingly arid landscape to life.
In conclusion… Wolwedans Dune Camp has a rustic charm and relaxed atmosphere. This is coupled with the attentive but not overbearing care given by the staff making every guest feel special. Of course the surrounding scenery speaks for itself but, in our opinion, this is first class simplicity in the desert!
