Pelican Bay Hotel review
good first night stop to get refreshed and sorted out for rest of the trip. Room very noisy with audible voices next door not helped by room having interconnecting door.
Very good breakfast spread and hotel conveniently located close to the excellent Raft restaurant and right on the bay for a bracing walk.
Baywatched.
Very good, large modern hotel.
Friendly, helpful staff. All rooms have lovely bay views, our room was not large but perfectly adequate.
Breakfast was good, we had dinner in the Raft restaurant next door.
The Europcar hire office is located in the hotel which was really useful.
Pelican Bay Hotel review
The good point is the location, close to the Raft restaurant and the harbour. Otherwise somewhere to avoid.
The rooms are poorly maintained - door handles come off, hinges loose, inter-connecting doors between rooms do not close properly. The bathrooms were dirty - lots of hair in the bath and on the floor. The housekeeping service was distinctly off-hand and the person on breakfast reception brusque and rude.
Overall impression is of a potentially good hotel badly let down by its management and staff. The sole exception was the doorman who was very helpful with our luggage and in clearing the car of sand!
Windy on the Bay
Another hotel that can be found at any resort but in this case the rooms are slightly more interesting with views over the bay. Food and restaurant service were good but reception staff appeared to require further training - a bag of ice could be obtained for the cool box at all lodges in the middle of the bush but not at Pelican Bay Hotel! A minor gripe but there seemed to be a lack of understanding with regard to several points at reception.
Overall however a reasonable place to stop-over on the tour.
A total disaster. See below.
The drive from Sossussvlei was too long. My fault as I undermestimated the amount of driving. It was also on a gravel road, which was generally in poor condition. The continuous vibration did not do Christine's back any good. She suffers from osteoporosis.
People I spoke to prior to the trip told me how good the roads were. We have learnt the hard way to never rely on 3rd party opinions again!

Expert Africa comments
It’s important that these comments be taken in the context of this traveller’s general comments on their trip. Please read these on the page entitled: ‘The Holiday from Hell’.
That said – it’s worth learning from a key point here. Often travellers who are planning their first trip with Expert Africa before will display blind faith in recommendations from friends and family, but scepticism to our suggestions. The truth is that usually friends or family will have visited an area or the lodge once, but few have anything like the depth of the experience that we have in these areas.
Expert Africa’s only objective when putting together a trip is to make it as enjoyable as possible for our travellers - and so it's always important to listen to our advice on your route.
