Cape Mountain Zebra Self-drive Safari

Fine dining, luxurious accommodation and a wide of range of leisurely activities make this a superbly comfortable self-driven safari. Visit the cosmopolitan Cape Town, tranquil coastal retreats, stylish wine farms and spectacularly peaceful nature reserves.

Cape Mountain Zebra Self-drive Safari: Summary

Cape Mountain Zebra in a nutshell

With stays in four luxurious residences, this leisurely self-driven safari offers a comprehensive exploration of some of South Africa’s most stunning locations: combining fine dining with indulgent creature comforts, diversely beautiful landscapes and a gentle introduction to the continent’s local flora and fauna.

Beginning in Cape Town, the route first offers the opportunity to explore the cosmopolitan city and its breathtaking coastline. The opulent Camps Bay Retreat boasts stunning views over the sea, where winding paths lead through the private reserve’s lush woodlands and down to the nearby beaches and glens.

Next, the safari visits Bushman’s Kloof Wilderness Reserve, which is home to 35 mammal species and over 150 species of bird. Set between the Cedarberg Mountains and the vast plains of the Karoo, this luxury retreat offers a range of activities: from nature drives and canoeing to hiking and guided excursions to local San and Khoisan rock-art sites.

The next stop is Bablyonstoren, situated on a stylishly smart working wine farm between Franschhoek and Paarl, where guests will enjoy spacious interiors, superb views and delicious food.

The thatched Grootbos Garden Lodge concludes the safari, from where guests might explore the local caves, engage in a variety of walking or water based activities or simply sit and enjoy their view over South Atlantic’s Walker Bay.

Camps Bay Retreat

Days 1-6

Camps Bay Retreat is a smart hotel which feels rather like a very good upmarket guesthouse. Set on the slopes of Lion’s Head, it is spread out over a small private reserve, which covers 1.6 hectares (four acres) of lush woodlands, streams and waterfalls above Camps Bay, with beautiful views of the sea. The hotel is within a 300m walk of the seafront with its beaches, restaurants and nightlife.

Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve

Days 6-8

East of Clanwilliam, between the Cedarberg Mountains and the vast plains of the Great Karoo, stand – to use its full title – the luxurious Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat. The focus here is on this luxury, which combined with fine dining, service and a range of fairly gentle activities adds up to somewhere that attracts people who might not normally head for a mountain retreat.

Babylonstoren

Days 8-10

Babylonstoren is a stylish hotel located on a working wine farm on the lower slopes of the scenic Simonsberg Mountains. It is located part way between Franschhoek and Paarl, surrounded by vineyards and orchards and only an hour’s drive from Cape Town and the airport.

Grootbos Garden Lodge

Days 10-13

The thatched Garden Lodge at Grootbos overlooks the Atlantic coast, just a short drive east of Hermanus. It’s set within the beautiful Grootbos Private Natural Reserve, which covers about 2,500ha (2.5km²) of natural coastal fynbos. It promises high-quality family-friendly accommodation, service and food, plus lots of activities focused on its natural environment.
