Flame Tree Cottages are set in a large garden...
Flame Tree Cottages: Our full report
In the north of Zanzibar Island, a short walk from the busy centre of Nungwi village, Flame Tree Cottages is located in extensive pretty gardens along a lovely stretch of soft, white-sand beach. It's a pleasant guesthouse with varied accommodation, owned by a Zanzibari-Scottish couple.
Flame Tree Cottages has 15 whitewashed rooms, including three family rooms, and a honeymoon suite, all spread out in the gardens beside the beach. Each has a large veranda with cushioned easy chairs, and colonial-style arches to frame the view of the gardens.
Inside, the en-suite rooms are immaculate, with lovely fabrics, cool tiled floors, beautifully finished (and locally crafted) wardrobes, and king-size, double or twin beds. All are air conditioned, and kitted out with a toaster and a kettle, a fridge, a fan and mosquito repellent. A small display case of local spices hangs in each room. As well as en-suite bathrooms, some have their own kitchen, while others share this useful resource – and for a small surcharge, pans and crockery can be supplied.
Flame Tree Cottages is a good option for families, with three of the rooms designed for families. ‘Rosemary and Thyme’ is made up of two bedrooms with interconnecting doors, while ‘Jasmin’ has the addition of a sitting room, and ‘Guava & Lime’ has two interconnecting rooms (with a lockable door), each with their own veranda and separate entrances.
Central to Flame Tree Cottages is the restaurant, where most of the tables are laid out in the shaded gardens, but with some in the shade of the trees by the beach. There’s a sparkling turquoise swimming pool in the gardens, and a small clearing where yoga classes are offered.
Our viewFlame Tree Cottages offers simple yet good value accommodation on Zanzibar’s busier northern beaches, making it a good option for those watching the budget or looking for an unpretentious stay. With three family rooms, it’s also a good choice for those with children.
