Red Lechwe Safari

Superb guiding from three fabulous camps full of character in three contrasting areas for a fabulous safari to the Okavango Delta and Kalahari Desert.

Red Lechwe Safari: Summary

Red Lechwe Safari in a nutshell

Catch your first glimpse of the of Botswana’s glimmering Okavango Delta on a light aircraft flight from Maun to the chic Tuludi Camp. It’s located in the vast Khwai Private Reserve, some 200,000 hectares of wilderness between the Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. Here, find your stylish treehouse-style suite perched among leadwoods with wonderful views across seasonal floodplains from its private plunge pool.

The stunning reserve and its permanent water sources draw all manner of plains game, huge herds of elephants and plenty of predators including wild dogs, cheetahs and leopards. Being in a private reserve, you can discover on day and night drives, guided walking safaris, mokoro canoe excursions and boat trips.

Take another short flight to Shinde Camp for your next three nights in the heart of the Okavango Delta on a palm island surrounded by lagoons and channels. Another great mix of activities await with more of a focus on water-based exploration. The staff and guide team here are particularly welcoming and, unlike most other camps, you can head out on three excursions a day if you fancy.

See the landscape abruptly turn to desert as you fly out to your final stop at the legendary Jack’s Camp in the Kalahari. Set at the edge of the lunar Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Jack’s evokes all the romance of the first European expeditions here with antique campaign furniture, Persian rugs and period artefacts twinned with some rather fabulous luxury touches such as its pool under a circus-like tent.

Completely remote, Jack’s focuses on the incredible landscape and human history here which stretches back tens of thousands of years. Learn about perhaps Africa’s oldest culture from San bushmen guides who call the Kalahari home and see how what may seem an inhospitable place has been their home for tens of thousands of years. The habituated meerkat colony is another highlight, as is camping out on the Makgadikgadi under one of the finest night skies imaginable. You may even spot some desert specialists here, such as bat-eared foxes, brown hyena and aardwolf.

Tuludi

Days 1-4

Tuludi opened in July 2019, and stands in the 200,000 hectare Khwai Private Reserve, bordering Botswana's Moremi Game Reserve to the south, and Chobe National Park to the east. Floodplains dotted with riverine forests stretch as far as the eye can see: the camp is set to have the most spectacular views.

Shinde Camp

Days 4-7

Shinde had a complete rebuild in 2020! We understand that it has retained an authentic classic safari style yet provides luxury with a touch of historical charm. It now has eight guest tents, including one family unit sleeping a maximum of 5 people. Shinde, meaning "tree squirrel" in Setswana, is situated on the edge of an area of deep water and lagoons in the heart of the Okavango Delta. It's a well-established camp in a private reserve just to the north of the Moremi Game Reserve. Its wide open floodplains sit alongside some very pretty waterways, allowing for a mixture of both land and water activities.

Jack's Camp

Days 7-10

Beneath a grove of mokolwane palm trees, Jack's Camp has extensive views across Botswana's immense Makgadikgadi Pans. Although dotted with patches of grassy savannah and photogenic palm islands, the pans are arid for much of the year, and can be relatively devoid of wildlife, but be prepared for unusual surprises. Jack's is one of Africa's most upmarket camps and takes pride in its motto: “Give them what they never knew they wanted.”

Helicopter Flight - Botswana

Helicopter Flight - Botswana

Various: from 30 minutes to half a day.

Low-flying, agile and offering superb views, helicopters are an ideal way to move around the Okavango Delta. You can use them instead of fixed-wing inter-lodge transfers or as an addition to other wildlife watching activities, and of course, helicopters can hover to allow that perfect pic, whereas fixed-wings can’t.
