Lake Eyasi lies at the base of the Eyasi Escarpment - part of the Western Rift Valley. The size of this soda lake varies enormously depending on the levels of rainfall during the year – extending up to 80km during some years, and drying out completely during dry periods, leaving an expansive white crust. The resident wildlife in the area is minimal apart from dik-dik and baboons. Depending on the water level, it is an important source of fish for Arusha and thousands of flamingos and other waterbirds can sometimes be found surrounding the edges.
