Erongo Wilderness Lodge review

We were looking forward to arriving at Eronga Wilderness Lodge to have some luxury, only to find that there was no water! It was a local problem and the owner had been out for two days helping to repair.

However, it was a lovely place to relax and we thorough enjoyed our stay here, and even more so when we were given free drinks for the two days because of the water problem!

We would encourage a stop here for a couple of days, if only to catch one's breath after the previous long drives and early mornings at Sesriem.

Erongo Wilderness Lodge review

Not far off the main road, but feels like you are so far from it all. Great location.

Our room had a brilliant view - one of the best. I felt sorry for anyone in the room at the bottom of our walkway (No.7?) as it had a view of a spiky bush!

Main dining area had great views too and was very warm and friendly.

We had chance to use the pool, but this was not great - loads of insects floating in it and green stuff growing on the sides. No paving around it either - just dirt/sand. Bit scrappy.

They had trouble with the water supply while we were there and there was no water after our first afternoon. We wern't bothered about this and they did offer to take us to Omaruru to a room they had rented to have a shower, but it's a bit far, so we declined and just used water from a bucket that they brought. We also declined a free lunch to make up for the inconvenience, as we don't eat lunch.

We had a lovely early morning walk with Johnny, the guide. His knowledge of the area, animals and plants was excellent.

Expert Africa comments

Lindy Van Den Bosch, co-owner of Erongo Wilderness Lodge, has apologised for inconvenience to guests due to the problem with the water during their stay, and would like to thank them for their patience and understanding.

One of the main water pumps in Omaruru, which is where Erongo’s water is piped from, had broken, and its replacement contained some airblocks which had to be bled out of the pipe. As this took a few days, the back-up tank at the lodge therefore also ran out of water.

Guests were supplied with bottled water in their rooms to drink and water taken from the pool was used to flush the toilet. As water was taken from the pool, the water level dropped so the pump could not be used, and so the pool became rather dirty. In order to conserve water, the grass was not watered during this period and so went brown in the heat.

Lindy has assured us that the water situation is now back to normal, and full facilities have resumed in the rooms. The swimming pool is once again clear and blue, and the grass is now returning to its original colour.

Erongo Wilderness Lodge review

Very nice place to end tour.

Wonderful setting among huge boulders. Very good for birds difficult to see elsewhere (Hartlaub's Francolin, Rockrunner, Monteiro's Hornbill, Black Eagle etc.).

Also good views of Porcupine and lots of Rock Dassie.

Staff changed a flat tyre for us.

Great stay at the Lodge.

Good accommodation, beautiful view, all bathroom facilities good. Friendly owners & staff. wonderful dining area looking out over rocky terrain, 2 open areas made it possible to see various bird & wildife.

Activities ie. am & pm walks great, friendly & knowledgeable staff. Wonderful views with a knowledgeable guide, need to be fit, fairly strenuous climbs! Owner/manager made a particular point to do a stargazing 1/2 hour, afternoon tea & cake was a nice touch.

Good food & catered well for vegetarians.

Heaven in the mountains

We stayed on our last night and what a fabulous place to end our holiday on.

The lodge is tucked away in the mountains and you park your car at the bottom and they come and fetch you in a 4x4. The fixed tents are dotted around the rocks along raised walkways and are big and nicely furnished with a veranda and amazing bathroom build ito the rocks.

The dining room and small swimming pool are up more walkways at the top of the lodge. The dining room is light and airy with scenic views on one side. They really care about food here and have aspirations to fine dining. The quality was excellent as was the standard of cooking. They also provide afternoon tea with delicious homemade cakes. The service was excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful.

We loved it and were sad we only stayed one night.

Erongo Wilderness Lodge review

Magnificent setting! Brilliant camp/ back to nature!

Drive into the camp beats any fairground ride! Food superb. Guided walk informative and very enjoyable. Fantastic views from summit, excellent guide. Attention by staff was superb.

Private anniversary dinner for our companions was quite remarkable and made it a very special occasion and stay.

Really enjoyed our stay here.

Erongo Wilderness Lodge review

Breathtaking location, spectacular views, alarmed at first with the abundance of dassies until we realised they were more frightened of us!
Tents were perfectly situated for privacy, loved the open plan en-suite

Service was second to none, especially on the occasion of our anniversary when we had dinner on the deck overlooking the pool. 'Timu' our waiter on that evening was excellent.

Our early morning nature walk was brilliant, the guide was very informative and the views at the top of the Baboon Walk were out of this world

Erongo Wilderness Lodge review

Erongo was the last lodge we visited - and one of the best. It has a unique setting amongst boulder-strewn landscape, and we were all fascinated by the activities of the many Rock Hyrax in and around the camp. The units are scattered along wooden walkways across the hillside, each with its own unique view.

Our teenagers room had the most 'integrated' bathroom we had seen, with large boulders incorporated in the design of the bathroom itself. Bathroom & toilet were again curtained off as in other camps, but it was good to see that the water from the shower served a dual purpose as drinking water for the Hyrax for whom water was at a premium!

The restaurant was small and intimate, and gave great views of wildlife in the evening such as porcupines and one one occasion, a small wild cat. Staff were friendly and helpful. We regretted only having been able to stay 1 night here - as 2 nights would give more opportunities to walk further afield with the guides. Would definitely go back again!

Just one point - beware of the bump on the road up - we had an X-Trail with good ground clearance - but easy to catch bottom of car!
