Erongo Wilderness Lodge review
A stunning location with rooms along walkways in the mountain.
The rooms are simple but nicely styled and you will walk up and down a lot - but the bar/restaurant area has good views and the food was delicious. Do take a guided walk- or two and climb the rocks at sunset.
We were made very welcome and would have liked an extra night here.

Koolus was terrific; he led us on a wonderful early morning hike.

Excellent hospitality and we were given accommodation with a great view, having met the managers at a previous camp.
Bedding will need an upgrade soon. Good guided walks.
Erongo Wilderness Lodge review
In Erongo, we loved watching the birds in the morning and, at night the porcupines and antilopes at the water hole, from the terrace of the lodge.
wonderful views
This was a very unique place to stay. The accomodation was lovely and despite the long trek up the steps, made up for by the views. The partially open-air bathroom and toilet were amusing! Although small and the water very very cold, the pool was a welcome relief from the heat; although it may have been better to have had loungers rather than canvas deckchairs which were both uncomfortable and mouldy from having been wet.
The staff here were especially lovely - hot water bottles were put in our beds at night!. Interim Managers were present during our 2 day stay; but they were very accomodating and rung the airport for us to confirm flights times for our return.
We did a sundowner drive with the guide David to Paula's cave which was lovely and made a very special end to our month long trip. We saw porcupines here and the most amazing selection of birds. Sadly, no sightings of animals at the floodlit waterhole although we did see tha black mongoose which was very special.

Wonderful location in the Erongo mountains, when you arrive you have to leave you vehicle approx. half a mile from the main lodge in the car park as the track up is very steep and can only be reached by 4x4 with an experienced driver. Collected by a driver within a few minutes of arrival.
Chalets set halfway up the mountain on stilts with wonderful views over the valley. Restaurant set on opposite hill with area outside main windows where food is put to attract Genet and Porcupine in the evenings and a wonderful array of birds during the day. Food was excellent and included in the price are guided walks.
We did two- evening sundowner and 3 hour morning walk with a 6am start, both were excellent and the guides - Johnnie and Heidi were knowledgeable about the fauna and flora. Also went on optional game drive to Paula's Cave which has a number of ancient bushman paintings which was most enjoyable.
This lodge would not be suitable for any that find walking over rough and steep terrain difficult.

Relaxed and friendly comfortable. Management changed whilst we were there so ? the future.
They the newies were charming. Hope the wooden section of the pathway to the restaurant has been sorted as it was a potential hazard in wet weather.

The sundowner walk on the first day was included and very enjoyable. The nature walk and nature drive, both with Gelasias, were very good, again with a first class guide. There were self-guided walks on offer but we did not try these. Staff and management were extremely welcoming and helpful although Mike, the manager, is due to move on which might change things.
It had more of an individual feel about it than some of the other places we stayed, perhaps because it was not part of a chain, or not so much on the main tourist routes.
There were interesting birds to see from the dining room, and other wildlife including porcupines and dassies (rock hyrax).

A place that respects its environment and allows you to be close to nature. Birds come really close to the dinning room and swimming pool area so its easy to sit and watch them. There may be harmless insects attracted to the lights at night so if you don't like being that close to nature it may not be the place for you.
The rooms are scattered up the hillside and are very comfortable with a verandah to sit and admire the view. They have tea/coffee making facilities and a minibar. The poshest tents I have ever seen!!
The surrounding hills provide some lovely walks - either guided or unguided - with a chance to see small animals, buck, baboons and many different birds as well as good views. The guides are charming and very knowledgeable. The food is good and the staff friendly.
The "back route" to Erongo takes you close to the mountains and is worth the extra time if you have a 4wheel drive or high vehicle (the road was badly eroded by the rivers which cross it)
Just one thing that is a shame in such a relaxed environment. Immediately on arrival you are required to sign a harsh indemnity which absolves the company of any responsibility. Nowhere else confronted us with such a document - let's hope that they can find a more customer-friendly approach.
