Mowani Mountain Camp review

We stayed here as Camp Kipje had had suffered a serious fire. It was a great place to stay, and very friendly. Marvellous setting.
Rooms were beautiful. Food was really enjoyable.

We visited the White Lady rockart on the way to the lodge, and the Twyfelfontein rock art whilst there. Both very worthwhile. On the day we left, we saw the Petrified Forest which is astonishing and well worth a visit.

Mowani Mountain Camp review

Wonderful welcome with cold flannels and a chilled drink whilst activities were explained. Our tent was beautiful - newly renovated with all mod cons and with stunning views over the mountains and valley. The sundowner spot is very special with drinks and nibbles and the company of rock dassies.

We went on the morning nature/game drive which was really enjoyable - we saw plenty of game and birds of prey as well as the desert elephants. We also took the guided trip to Twyfelfontein - good value and we got more out of this than if we had done this ourselves.

We had the same waiter throughout our stay which is a nice touch and all the staff were friendly and helfpul, although the service was definitely more formal here than at our other lodges. We particularly appreciated Stewart's daily sport results updates!

Great sundowners at Mowani

After a very bumpy drive which was due to the road having been very badly damaged in the 'rains' we were delighted with our 'view' room at Mowani.

The camp is well run, the staff are friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and the sundowner drinks and snacks on the rocks were super. The game drives were interesting and it was great seeing the desert elephants.

The scenery is wonderful and the rock paintings and carvings at Twyfelfontein were stunning. The climb to the paintings etc was slightly difficult even with the pathway that has been built.

Mowani Mountain Camp review

The planned renovation is certainly needed. The location is gorgeous. Everyone was very friendly.

The drive to the elephants was a little long, but worth it when we got there.

Mowani Mountain Camp review

This was the only disappointment. We stayed here 10 years ago - it has since been sold, and we felt had really gone downhill. Bathrooms not clean and incredibly tired; the boys' rooms smelled of sewage. Furniture tatty; food and service not good.

Absolutely FREEZING the evening we were there - obviously, the weather isn't their fault, but there was only 1 very ineffective heater in the dining room/bar area, and no fire.

Decadent tents, poor service

The setting of Mowani Mountain Camp is superb and the brochure looks fantastic. This is all the good we can say about it.
The tented accomodation we received after a long argument, since we had a booking for a luxury room, was decadent at best.
Don't trust the website or the brochure, the cool tent with outside view bathroom is nothing like what you'll actually get.
The tent doesn't close fully: a 10cm hole is always there, allowing animals to get inside the tent (we got a mice and his droppings on our bed, but you could also find a snake or something dangerous in the tent). The toilet and the shower are open on the room, just separated by a screening, no proper wall separation. They claim there's a difference between a "standard" and a "view" tent...but they are identical as far as we've seen, since we had one of each.

The service is really obtrusive: it feels like the staff is trying too hard to be fun at all cost - they would start chatting with you even if that means interrupting a conversation you were having with fellow travellers, and they keep pushing to sell you extras (beverages, activities). On the other hand when we actually needed some attention (the room we had booked wasn't available) we have been treated in a very rude and unprofessional way.

From an up-market lodge we would expect better facilities, a proper tented accommodation and a professional service. If we had to go back to Damaraland, we would blindly take a chance on any other place, but we would never stay here again.

Really, Really Good

Set high overlooking stunning Damaraland scenery, Mowani was a great favourite. We had a deluxe room rather than a view tent and it was extremely good apart from the poorest shower of the trip. It was impossible to get a consistent temperature and the water hit you like needles..

Because of it's close proximity to the public areas we feared noise but it's not that sort of place and there was never the slightest problem. Views from the room deck, restaurant and particularly the sundowner spot (very memorable) are spectacular.

Service and food excellent. Drives to see the desert adapted elephants and Twyfelfontein rock engravings recommended. Twyfelfontein would be very easy to do yourself as it's close-by and there are guides available.

Mowani Mountain Camp review

Mowani has a stunning location and had been highly recommended by friends who had visited several years ago. Everywhere we went in Namibia , the staff were great and we felt that Mowani's were probably the best we encountered, so praise indeed.

Somehow, it didn't quite fulfil expectations and was probably the only place that disappointed in any way. Our luxury room was a good size, well furnished and had great views but the shower was erratic (too hot or too cold) and the bathroom did not deserve the luxury designation - tired, stained plumbing and fittings, cracked shower waste.

Quality of food ingredients was high, but vegetables at dinner dull (plain boiled everything) and usually cold.

The camp has recently had a new manager who perhaps has not yet had chance to make his mark - it feels to us that this place is trading on its reputation. We would hesitate to recommend it on this showing - it's excellent in some things and distinctly below average in others.
