Things to see on this map of South LuangwaAlthough at first glance these camps and lodges look tightly-packed, the reality is very different when you are there. Most are small, and operate many walking safaris as well as 4WD trips, so their impact on the park is light. At most camps, especially outside the central 'Mfuwe area', you feel as if you're the only camp in the park.
Looking at the camp's locations, you'll see that most are clustered along the banks of the Luangwa River – which twists and curves its way from north-east of this map to the south-west. Most of the few that lie away from this curving line are located on small tributaries to the Luangwa.
If you zoom out from this level even a little, you'll see clearly the hard line of the Muchinga Escarpment which runs roughly parallel to the Luangwa River, and east of it; this also is rough indication for the eastern boundary of South Luangwa National Park.
