A great introduction to the desert
We were given an exceptional welcome and greeting on our arrival at this camp which is superbly located with a real feeling of "wilderness" and uniqueness.
We participated in the morning drive to Sossusvlei and the dunes and had a superb guide who had a perfect balance of enthusiasm, expertise and humour, which kept our 13 year-old enthused throughout the trip, despite the very early start (including dung-spitting)!
There was a really good and friendly atmosphere at this camp from everybody there (including singing for another guest's birthday).
Kulala Wilderness Camp review
What a fantastic setting. This is a very special place with a wonderful feeling of isolation and peace and quiet. The manager Thomas, and his staff are the friendliest that we have come across. Nothing is too much trouble. Although we had our own car we decided to go on the dunes excursion. Despite the cost and the very early start it lived up to expectations and was worth the expense. David, out guide was both informative and humourous and we thoroughly enjoyed our day with him.
The one slightly negative comment was the quantity of food. The food was very well presented and of a high quality, but larger portions, particularly of vegetables and starch would be better.

After a long drive from Aus, with a splendid break at Helmeringhausen on the way, we had a lovely welcome at Kulala. The staff were extremely friendly and mostly Herero, and two of them stayed with us after dinner for a long chat about life!
The food here was outstanding, rather more inventive than elsewhere in Namibia and slightly smaller portions, which wasn't unwelcome. The room was splendid, quite close to the main house (another coup for Expert Africa) with a splendid view over the desert.
We had a tour to the Sossusvlei dunes on our one full day which was outstanding, a nice combination of travel, walking, climbing dunes and watching wildlife and birds. Our guide, whose name eluded us, was brilliant.
Views, dunes & chocaholic mice
Road from Zebra to Sesriem the worst we encountered on trip. Rear tyre punctured by 30cm steel fence rod of which all but 2 cm penetrated tyre - fortunately without disasterous results. The road has drifts that are deeper than elsewhere and at time of visit appears not to have seen a grader for some time. We were told that a visitor had rolled a car on it within the previous fortnight. Be warned and keep speeds lowish. Puncture was repaired within 30 minutes by Sesriem garage.
We loved Kulala Wilderness lodge with its glorious westward facing views over a grassy plain towards mountains. An unconventionally placed window in each bathroom allows one to enjoy the scenery while sitting on the toilet! The first of several swimming pools with an outstanding view. Great food on the terrace. Only drawback is that it is about fifty minutes drive from Sessriem park entrance.
On arrival the manager warned us about the exploits of the local mice, who are chocaholics. No kidding! Our daughters were woken by a mouse that had liberated a "Tracker" bar from deep inside a suitcase and was carrying it across the room, while in the other room a mouse chewed through six aluminium wrapped chocolate drinks sachets - to the detriment of nearby clothes. Sweeties went in the room safe the second night.
We had a glorious day amongst the Dunes, but after a leisurely start and slow drive arrived at Sossus Vlei road head about 1100. Although we had a 4WD Toyota Hilux, it was on road tyres and was glad to accept advice not to attempt drive to end of 4WD track and instead paid to be taken in. Without off-road skill on sand I think could have got bogged.
We arranged to be collected after 2 hours, but would have needed more time to see and walk whole area. Dead Vlei more interesting than Sossus Vlei for photography, but wind and heat built up by midday and would recommend earlier arrival at roadhead to others. Take plenty of water and some food as no refreshments available in park.
On journey back stopped at and climbed Dune 45. A stiff climb of about 500 ft on soft sand in mid-afternoon 30+ temperatures is not for the unfit, but was amply rewarded at the the summit of the dune by one of the very greatest views I have seen anywhere on my travels. Long vistas both up and down the valley. Climb is much recommended if you have the stamina. Sesriem canyon offers cool shade during afternoon, but other features of park are more impressive.
Welcome to the desert
Great location and accommodation.
The 9 hr outing to the dunes and Sesriem canyon was memorable. David, our guide was arguably the best we encountered - infectious enthusiasm and keen to make our experience memorable; even took us on an extra 90 min 'nature walk' on our last morning prior to our flight.
Thomas, the manager, was just a little intense, but ran a very tight ship.
Kulala Wilderness Camp review
Energetic and enthusiastic manager was extremely helpful in resolving an issue to do with car hire which I will write about below. It was clear that he had had several experiences of dealing with Europcar deficiencies on behalf of his clients.
Balloon trip was fantastic.
David the guide we felt was a bit intrusive in his handling of bugs and lizards - no other guide picked up living creatures.

The manager, Thomas, was exuberant and made an enormous effort to make all his guests very welcome.
Excursion to Sossusvlei with Kulala Wilderness Camp:
Whilst getting up at 5am on the second day rather than the first might be a better option the excursion was nevertheless a fabulous introduction to the area and an unforgetable experience. The guide (David) was very knowledgable and great company.
The sundowner trip was also of the highest calibre.
Kulala Wilderness Camp review
We can't praise Kulala Wilderness Camp highly enough. Thomas and his staff were absolutely delightful. We have never experienced such good service in all of our years of travelling to date. We were made to feel very welcome.
The Camp itself is in a beautiful location and it is a memory that will stay with us forever. Thomas and his guides were very knowledgeable about the area and we went on some interesting excursions each day, including a visit to the dunes, a nature drive and a sundowner.
We were very sorry to leave the Camp when it was time to go!
