Red Lechwe Safari: Day-by-day
More detailed information of what each day entails, and the various places you’ll stay on the Red Lechwe Safari. Everything we do is completely tailor-made so while this is an idea which works well, we’ll always design an itinerary just for you.
Starts: Maun Airport
Maun to Moremi by air & 4WD
On arrival in Maun, you'll be met and escorted to your light aircraft for the flight of about half an hour to Banoka Airstrip. Here, a guide from Tuludi will be waiting with an open-sided 4WD for the 15-minute game drive to camp through the lush Khwai Private Reserve.

Tuludi
Tuludi opened in July 2019, and stands in the 200,000 hectare Khwai Private Reserve, bordering Botswana's Moremi Game Reserve to the south, and Chobe National Park to the east. Floodplains dotted with riverine forests stretch as far as the eye can see: the camp is set to have the most spectacular views.

When we visited the building site in March 2019 we absolutely loved what we saw. Tuludi is going to be beautiful, offering stunning Okavango Delta scenery and luxury accommodation, and if it's anything like its sister camps Sable Alley and Hyena Pan, the staff will be friendly and attentive, and guides and camp management will be very good too.
"Beautiful design.. we couldn't believe we got to stay in such a beautiful place."

Night drive
Khwai to Shinde by air & 4WD
The short light-aircraft flight west to Shinde gives you plenty of time for a final morning activity at Tuludi before you head for the airstrip. On touching down near Shinde, scarcely 15 minutes later, a guide will be waiting for the five-minute 4WD transfer across game-rich grassland to camp.

Shinde Camp
From the moment you arrive at Shinde, just minutes from the bush airstrip, it’s clear you’re in good hands. The team here is one of the most long-standing in the Delta, united in their welcoming approach and their understanding of the environment.

And it’s an intrinsically beautiful environment: the tree-shaded camp looking out over open plains, backed by a mosaic of channels. As the dry season progresses, wildlife – both predators and prey – is drawn to the plains, creating a near-Arcadian spectacle. Less visible are some of the aquatic species, though the lucky few may spot the sitatunga. And the birdlife in this part of the Delta is a must.
Exploration – in the hands of a team of experienced guides – is there for the asking, on game drives day and night, motorboat excursions, gentle mokoro trips or on foot. Unusually, options are limited only by your energy – so if you’re up for three activities a day, go for it.
"staff create lovely atmosphere.. game drives produced some wonderful experiences"

Alternatively, settle back and watch from the comfort of your traditional tented chalet, or the multi-level structure that culminates in an open-sided dining room up in the trees. Or add a touch of hedonism and make for the pool – with a view, of course. See our full report on Shinde Camp

Helicopter
Shinde to the Makadikgadi by air & 4WD
After a brief transfer to Shinde Airstrip, today's flight of a little over an hour takes you from the wetlands of the northern Okavango to the oft-arid expanses of the Kalahari salt pans, perhaps touching down in Maun. On arrival, a 15-minute drive completes your journey to Jack's Camp.

Jack's Camp
Jack's Camp is spread out beneath a grove of mokolwane palm trees, with extensive views across Botswana's immense Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, dotted with patches of grassy savannah and photogenic palm islands. Arid for much of the year, the pans can be relatively devoid of wildlife, but be prepared for unusual surprises. Jack’s is one of Africa's costlier camps, and takes pride in its motto: 'Give them what they never knew they wanted.'

"Overall a good stay in a stunning location with excellent guiding and food."

Jack's is a high-quality camp offering a unique experience in a captivating and unusual landscape. Do expect some luxury, romance and remoteness; don't expect electric lights or lots of big game. The close meerkat encounters, the archaeology (yes, really!) and the odd surprise were the highlights for us, and it contrasts strongly with Botswana's lush Okavango – so can really add to a trip. That said, Jack's is expensive, as are the transfer flights to reach it, so many question its value. Given its unique qualities, we find that an impossible question to answer.
