Trip of a Lifetime

Zimbabwe and 1 other country between 18 Jul 2015 and 28 Jul 2015

Trip rating: Excellent
"Overall the trip exceeded my expectations - the activities, the animals, the people, the atmosphere - all of it was phenomenal. I would absolutely go back. We really debated which country to go to and I'm SO glad we selected Zimbabwe.

I could have lived without the trip to Capetown on the front end. It was nice, but not much different than any other cosmopolitan European city. So in hindsight I would have preferred to channel that time into safaris at the camps. But overall an amazing vacation with a lot of unexpected education."

Victoria & Alfred Hotel

Victoria & Alfred Hotel

"Convenient Hotel In V&A Waterfront"

3 nights Arrived 18 Jul 2015
"The buffet breakfast was a pleasant surprise - I could have sat there all day. The front desk staff wasn't overly friendly until the last morning when we were leaving. Since our departure was prior to the start of breakfast they packed a "to-go" back that was FILLEd with food. Although I wish I had known that the buffet would already be out - I would have just asked if I could have eaten from that even if they weren't officially "open".

We asked them to make dinner reservations for us one night and the front desk said she would let us know when they were confirmed which she never did (but we ended up going for dinner anyway and it all worked out).

The location was very convenient and the room was nice. Appreciated the complementary water."

Little Makalolo Camp

Little Makalolo Camp

"Amazing Atmosphere in Little Makalolo"

2 nights Arrived 21 Jul 2015
"Loved everything about the camp. The entire staff was so friendly starting the moment we arrived at the airstrip - cool towel, cooler of beverages and animal spotting before we even arrived at camp. Once we got there, a warm towel, a welcome cocktail and 5 or 6 gentlemen greeting us, taking our bags, getting us settled and getting us out to see wildlife. Our guide, Mike (or Miiiiiiiike as we all called him) was AMAZING, not just knowledgeable which is obviously a requirement for the job, but charismatic, fun and flexible, always trying to accommodate what we wanted to do/see.

The rooms were wonderful, including the charming loo with a view and the outdoor shower. The only downside was that warm and cold water in the sink came from 2 different taps, so getting "warm" water was a challenge. But I loved the "water babies" that were put on our beds every night to keep us warm (and also in the jeeps in the morning).

When there were questions/issues with our departure time from the camp they were great about trying to work it all out, never getting frustrated and always keeping us informed.

The log house by the watering hole was an amazing experience, the food was delicious and the conversation around the firepit after dinner was great. I would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting a great safari experience."

Stretch Ferreira Safaris Camp

Stretch Ferreira Safaris Camp

"Stretch at Goliath can't be beat"

3 nights Arrived 23 Jul 2015
"I can't say enough good things about this camp and particularly Stretch. We selected Goliath specifically because of the reviews we'd read about Stretch and he DID NOT disappoint. Such an entertaining character with an incredibly vast knowledge but also the perfect blend of bond and healthy respect with and for the animals. Watching him track was amazing - I could barely see the prints let alone understand which way they were going, what pace, what time, etc.

The camp was great. To have elephants wandering outside your tent just a screen away is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Whether we were having dinner around the firepit or at the dining table it wasn't just a meal but an experience. Bradley made sure we were constantly hydrated (no matter your beverage of choice) and the food was delicious, including the birthday cake that was made for one of the guests.

It was kind of nice that the power went off at 9, you just have to plan accordingly - a torch is a must! I was under the impression we wouldn't be able to charge anything while we were there, so the charging station was great and a converter wasn't even necessary. Also be aware of the sand flies - they'll nibble on your feet and ankles if you don't have bug spray on.

The only downside was that we were told laundry service was next day, but then our clothes weren't available for 2 days...only a problem if you're looking to re-wear something and can't get it back. But Caitlin was great about hunting down our stuff so it all worked out.

But if you want to see nature up close and personal (walking up to an elephant Stretch knows by name, seeing an impala dragged up into a tree by a leopard, surprising a mother lion while protecting her 2 cubs, canoeing around hippos) this is ABSOLUTELY the place to go!! We miss Stretch already!"

Ilala Lodge

Ilala Lodge

"Convenient Location in Vic Falls"

2 nights Arrived 26 Jul 2015
"The hotel was nice - nothing special but the people were very helpful. I do wish it had been easier to get change, but every time we asked them to break a $20, you were lucky to get anything smaller than a $10, which doesn't make negotiating when shopping very easy, since many of the merchants don't seem to have change either!

We were told meals were on our own here, but turns out breakfast was included, not just a buffet, but also hot breakfast options, which was a nice surprise. The rooms included water, but since ours wasn't ready when we checked in, we ended up buying it at the restaurant for lunch, which was a little annoying since we wouldn't have done that had we known.

Great location - a quick walk from the shops and a short bus ride to all of our excursions (Vic Falls, sunset cruise, helicopter tour) and the hotel did a great job coordinating all of our transportation and helping us identify some other activities.

We ate dinner at the restaurant one night and it was very tasty, although the room was a little on the chilly side as they leave the doors open to the outside so if you get cold, bundle up!

The room itself was adorable, with little doors to an outdoor "patio.""
