Defassa Waterbuck Safari

Defassa Waterbuck Safari: In full

This Zambia safari holiday takes you from the Southern Kafue up through to the Busanga Plains section of the Kafue National Park, focussing on some of the last owner-run camps in the park. The park covers 22,400 square metres of varied flora and fauna, giving you many opportunities for great wildlife sightings. Busanga Plains boasts large herds of elusive antelope such as roan, and the area is one of the best for viewing cheetah.

This trip focuses on the owner-run camps Kaingu Lodge, Musekese and Mukambi Plains.

This safari is really designed for travellling within Zambia's dry season, from around July to October. Outside of this time, these camps are closed, and this safari is not possible.

Days 1-3

3 nights at KaingU Lodge (full board & activities) | Kafue National Park, Zambia

Kaingu Lodge is situated in the south of Kafue National Park.Following your arrival in Lusaka with your own flights, you will be collected for your road transfer through the Zambian countryside and through local towns on your way to Kafue National Park. After a drive lasting approximately five hours, you"ll arrive at your base for the next 3 nights, Kaingu Lodge. This lovely lodge is set right on the banks of the Kafue River and the owners run the property with great care and passion. The six rooms are large tents with indoor and outdoor bathrooms, with the showers stylishly set in stone. Game drives through the miombo woodland and walks up the granite hills that dot the area are possible, but the highlight of the area is the Kafue River - perfect for canoe trips or island lunches!

Days 4-6

3 nights at Musekese Camp (full board & activities) | Kafue National Park, Zambia

After a leisurely breakfast at Kaingu Lodge, you will have a four hour drive north to Musekese Camp, via Hook Bridge, where you'll spend 3 nights. This newer camp was refurbished at the start of 2016 and the four tents are simple and rustic, without sacrificing any comfort. Although the camp is small and owner-run, the service is comparable to high-end lodges, and the guiding by Musekese"s enthusiastic owners Phil and Tyrone is easily some of the best in the park. Walking safaris, game drives and boat trips allow you to explore this area that has only fairly recently opened to visitors.

Days 7-9

3 nights at Mukambi Plains Camp (full board & activities) | Kafue National Park, Zambia

Mukambi Plains Camp is hidden amongst a tree island in northern Kafue. After breakfast you"ll transfer across to Mukambi Plains Camp for three nights in one of Busanga"s pole-and-canvas chalets. During these days you"ll have the opportunity for both day and night drives in open 4WD vehicles. During the wetter months there is also the possibility of boat trips, and for birdwatchers this can be an exciting spot.

Day 10

Depending on your onward plans, you might either transfer to Busanga Airstrip in the morning for your flight to Lusaka, or if you are no rush you could enjoy a morning safari, a leisurely lunch and return to Lusaka in the afternoon in time for a connecting evening flight.
