My Feb 2008 trip
Namibia between 16 Feb 2008 and 2 Mar 2008
Arranged By Tracy Lederer
Road Lodge Cape Town International Airport, South Africa (this camp has since closed)
"basic but close to airport"
Not currently featured by Expert Africa
Zebra River Lodge
"excellent walking"
we had problems on arriving in wet season as rivers flooded and not passable for about 2 hrs even though in 4 x 4
Rob and Marianne were not present - and I think the stay would have been enhanced if they had been as would have liked more local knowledge/geology/nature info/astronomy etc"
Gail, who has been with them for a number of years, is also based at Zebra River and has a very good knowledge of the area, especially the geology. In fact, she has worked on an archaeological dig on the property.
Rob and Marianne are also hoping to put together an information booklet which will then be available in the rooms.
Sossus Dune Lodge
"fantastic location"
very relaxed atmosphere with helpful and attentive staff
the rationale to be inside the national park for an early start before sunrise does not really hold and there were plenty of other cars in before us - partly because our guide was unkeen to leave earlier and also because others can come in from the campsite etc.quite easily before dawn.
the service and food was excellent - the billing slightly chaotic (NB they did not ask for a deposit which Expert Africa had said they might) they could do with more shaded areas to sit outside especially by the bar and swimming pool"
Sam's Giardino
"gourmet B & B"
Sam was exceptionally helpful (especially in helping us as we were still chasing lost luggage)
The only suggestion I would make would be to maybe change to nicer towels!
Turnstone Tour day trip to Sandwich Harbour - excellent trip - informative, interesting and what a picnic!"
Coast and Sandwich Harbour
"sandwich harbour experience"
22 Feb 2008 • All-day excursion
Kayaking with seals
"didn't do it"
23 Feb 2008 • Morning excursion
Mowani Mountain Camp
"wonderful location"
we didn't do the elephant excursion as we were ill but I gather they rarely see them in the wet season anyway
the food we had was delicious and the staff attentive
the only negative was that having brought us soup to our balcony for lunch one day they still had not cleared away the dirty dishes by the time we checked out the next morning"
Ongava Lodge
"rhinotastic"
we went on a drive with them and saw rhinos (which I think is fairly guarenteed) but actually then really enjoyed more the rhino tracking on foot one morning.
I think the guides know an immense amount about the animals but do not give enough infomation spontaneously although could answer any question.
We spent days driving ourselves into Etosha as well and if you have your own car would recommend this as very easy
the food here was adequate but the worst we had in Namibia (which is partly a reflection on how good it was elsewhere!)"
Erongo Wilderness Lodge
"twitchers paradise"
it is a bird watchers heaven apparantly and it does make you feel the size of your telescope is inadequate compared to the other guests!
the food was fantastic"
arranged transfer did not happen as apparantly waiting at domestic airport!"
