My Feb 2025 trip
Tanzania between 28 Feb 2025 and 10 Mar 2025
We were paired with an excellent guide, very knowledgeable and who went above and beyond to ensure we had great mammal and bird sightings. Especially in the Ngorongoro crater and Ndutu area, the abundance of wildlife was mesmerizing.
We stayed mostly in the parks and we could really feel the proximity of the wildlife during our stay. Especially, one member of our party had a very close encounter with a lion one morning when going to breakfast (it was after sunrise and the night guards seemed to have finished their shift). We found out later that lions liked to use the path near our cabin very frequently.
More information on how to react and deal with this sort of encounter could have been helpful (not just saying there could be 'wildlife' passing by). Luckily, they managed to make it back to the cabin unharmed and live to tell the tale! Had something bad happened, our trip would have turned out very differently."
Feedback response
We were delighted to hear that these travellers had such a fantastic trip and thoroughly enjoyed the variety of parks they visited. Following these comments, we took the matter up directly with Ndutu Safari Lodge. The camp sincerely apologised that the night watchman was not available that morning to escort guests. They confirmed that this was a one-off incident; under their standard camp protocols, a night watchman is normally present throughout the evening, night, and early morning to accompany guests safely between their rooms and the main areas.
As Ndutu Safari Lodge is an unfenced property, the natural movement of wildlife through the camp is carefully monitored by the team. However, they acknowledged that better communication regarding potential wildlife encounters would have been helpful and have taken steps to reinforce this with their staff.
We took this incident very seriously and included a note in our lodge write-up to remind guests that they must never move around the camp grounds unaccompanied during the hours when the camp has briefed them that they must have an escort.
We were pleased to hear that, despite this experience, the travellers had an overall wonderful stay.

Lion's Paw
"Lion's Paw review"
We had high expectations for this accommodation after looking at the photos, but unfortunately were a bit disappointed especially for the price point. Staff were nice and polite, but untrained: there were many of them hanging around not quite sure what to do. We had to wait a long time to have drink orders taken; we were asked what time we wanted coffee the next morning, but no coffee would be ready when we arrived for breakfast, etc.
One of the rooms we were given was also the only one without any shade in the afternoon, making it extremely hot inside and on the balcony so we couldn't fully enjoy it.
Day game drive into the Ngorongoro crater was amazing - early start and close proximity led to a very peaceful early morning in the crater."

2 Mar 2025 • All-day excursion
We still saw large herds of elephants, vervet monkeys and lots of birdlife.
No lions were sighted that day sadly.
overall, not recommended for waterbirds.

Due to unseasonable dryness, the migration had moved on so no mega herds of wildebeest were seen
Very dusty due to lack of rain."

Kubu Kubu
"Kubu Kubu review"
A lone male elephant came to start eating the trees around the swimming pool whilst we were there. Slightly worrying as we were around the pool and someone had to tell us to exit via the side gate, but then we spent 30 minutes watching the elephant from the main lodge deck as he slowly demolished the vegetation.
Escorts to/from rooms were friendly and capable, and the system for calling an escort from the main lodge worked well.
Servers for dinner were all very friendly. Food was delicious, and portions generous (perhaps too generous as we could not finish any dinner). Lodge was very quiet during our stay, with only a handful of rooms occupied.
One room had a bees' nest in the outdoor shower, so no outdoor showers for us."
