Located just 500 metres from Lusaka International Airport, the new Protea is a smart international hotel ...
... with plenty of facilities. The hotel is part of the Marriott chain of hotels.
Opened in late 2024, the new Protea is located just a short distance from the main airport terminal – reached either by a regular, complimentary shuttle bus, or a short walk. Though we haven’t yet had the chance to visit, its closeness to the airport makes it exceptionally convenient for any travellers arriving on a late flight, or departing in the early morning, to save a longer drive through Lusaka and any potential traffic.
Part of the large, international Marriott chain, the Protea Hotel at Lusaka Airport has 80 rooms and suites spread across four floors. We have previously visited its sister hotel in Livingstone, and we’d expect a similar style – with stylish, comfortable rooms, complemented by a range of facilities, and an efficient and helpful team.
We understand that whilst the rooms vary in terms of their size, all the rooms have either a king-sized bed or two double beds, and air-conditioning; with views out across to the pool, the surrounding gardens and across to the airport itself.
Each room has an en-suite bathroom with a shower; some also have a bathtub. The suites have a smaller lounge area, while most rooms have a comfortable chair, and writing desk. Amenities include tea and coffee facilities, an electronic safe, minibar, and a satellite TV.
The hotel has a large swimming pool surrounded by shaded loungers. There is a small bar here, and, as with its sister hotels, we’d expect friendly staff on hand to serve you a refreshing drink.
An all-day restaurant serves an array of local and international dishes, and there’s a separate bar area too. We understand that light meals are served on the terrace if you’re not wishing to choose from the buffet menu.
Being a large international hotel, the Protea Marriot has a number of facilities for guests to use, including a spa offering a range of beauty treatments, an on-site fitness centre, tennis courts and a large swimming pool.
If you prefer a slightly less corporate option in Lusaka, it’s sister hotel Ciela Resort & Spa has much larger gardens, and more restaurant options; or, for a smaller option with a bit more character, Latitude 15 is one of our favourites. However, we think this new Protea is going to be a great option for a one-night stay in Lusaka, especially if you’re arriving off one of the later international flights, or are on an early Proflight departure to one of the national parks.
