Unfortunate timing

The camp itself is laid out as a typical safari location which it is not. Although the chalet was adequate it was unfortunate we arrived, some 35 minutes from Lusaka airport, during a power outage which, apart from only 30 minutes it came back on during our overnight stay, continued. With no mains electricity there was a very limited dinner menu; basically steak only.

Battery lights (very limited illumination) were provided in our room which were not fully charged so we had to ask for replacements. Added to all this we discovered in the morning there was no hot water available to our chalet. After an early breakfast we departed for the airport. Due to low levels of water in the dams there are, or were, daily outages which were only supposed too be for no more than, I believe, 4 hours which affects the whole of the area including the city of Lusaka.

In future we would opt to stay at a hotel in Lusaka which would have adequate power back-up and probably be closer to the airport.

Pioneer Camp review

We spent only one night in Pioneer Camp between flights in and out of Lusaka so we arrived late at night and left early the following morning. It is very good - rooms ok though a bit rustic and the food is good.

Nice Environment close to the Airport

Very tranquil, nice environment only 25min from the airport, with nice large well appointed rooms.

Unfortunately we were only there a very short time due to delayed flights, however the camp still came & picked us up at 2am in the morning & were very helpful trying to find our lost luggage.

Very Friendly & helpful.

A good place on the way through

We were glad to have the family house even though it did not provide the same luxury as the chalets. However, apart from being a safe and quiet place, it is not particularly interesting.

We used Pioneer Camp as stopover for visiting another town and as conveniently located close to the airport.

Perfect for a first night in Zambia

I was met at the airport by a Pioneer Camp driver who was a welcome sight after a long and anxious journey. Once we arrived, I was quickly checked in and taken to my chalet which was exactly as described.

I enjoyed a nice afternoon around the grounds and the evening was spent at the open lodge area talking with other travelers and later eating a nice meal. It was a casual and very enjoyable atmosphere. The night became extremely cold but there was ample bedding so it was not a problem. Breakfast was also good and I was picked up at my chalet and taken to the airport promptly.

This camp delivered exactly what I was expecting. Although it wasn't a luxury lodge, it was a very comfortable and inviting place to spend my first night in Zambia.

Pioneer Camp review

This was a great place to stay after our flight into Lusaka. We were collected from the ariport and dropped back the following day for our next flight.

The room and food were good (the steak was very good) and the staff were very friendly. Excellent value.

Good stop over in Lusaka

Good drivers from and to the airport. The room was fine although nothing special but okay for the price. Hot water was available both in the evening and again in the morning. Food was tasty and freshly prepared. Good birding in the grounds - we saw owls and woodpeckers. We would happily stay there again.

My only suggestion for management to consider would be to I introduce a staff uniform or badge system. We were not certain who was looking after us as some of the staff seemed a bit reticent.

To unwind in peace...

Thank you to everyone at Pioneer for another very comfortable stay after my adventure in South Luangwa. Paul, Sophie and the team really have created the right blend of comfort for different styles of guests and travellers here. This is a social place to mix with the best kind of people those that love to explore the world.

Excellent steak again.
