"The crater is simply a must do if you find yourself in the area. It's such a unique ecosystem with so many micro-environments inside; there's forest, there's savannah, lakes, etc. all within this special place.
One pro tip our driver gave us that payed in spades; wake super early, go early, beat the crowds. It's worth it as those early hours ended up being our best in the crater.
Also keep your eyes peeled driving in, we had a leopard cross the road right in front of us and stop to check us out. Special moments indeed!" Read more about this whole safari

"Going to the crater was a dream come true. The stunning scenery and animal life was incredible.
The road conditions are poor (helps keep speed down) and when there's a sighting of a lion, for example, hundreds of jeeps descend upon it, unless you get there early." Read more about this whole safari

"If I had to go back and change anything about my safari itinerary I would skip Ngorongoro. Maybe we just had a bad day, but after coming from the Serengeti the crater was underwhelming.
The only animal I saw there that was a novelty were the flamingos.
If you are on the fence and planning on visiting the Serengeti I would spend more nights up there and skip this altogether." Read more about this whole safari

"Lions. Many many lions. Cheetahs. Hippos, elephants, one rhino (far away), hyenas, buffalo, wildebeests, flamingos. You name it. They have it. (Except pangolins)."

"Plenty of animals seen, all with the expert help of our guide, Victor. Into the crater early morning before all the “day trippers” and hoards if jeeps arrive - best time to be there."

"The crater is amazing, just a truly amazing experience. There are plenty of animals but we found the sightings in other areas to be more impressive, nearer, more intimate. We would say that our one day visit was enough."

"NOTHING can compare to the Ngorongoro Crater. This is one of the wonders of Africa - such a diverse population of animals live in the confines of this beautiful place.
Probably the highlight of our trip...." Read more about this whole safari

"Sheer enormity of crater quite overcoming"
Based at Plantation Lodge on 10 May 2023
"Driving down to the crater was a interesting experience as it was very misty and quite dense fog in parts. The viewing gallery down on to the crater was therefore not an option as no view. Beautiful wide open spaces with the crater as a continuous back ground. Saw lions, flamingos, zebras, wildebeest, a lone hippo, warthogs, jackals, hyenas, secretary birds, antelope, gazelles and enjoyed a picnic lunch in designated area. All very satisfying."

"The very physical nature of the crater means that the animals located within the crater do not easily leave or migrate, therefore the viewing opportunities are plentiful. Having said that, one has to counter that by the realisation that you cannot always get as close as you would like to the animal for photography as vehicles are restricted to designated roads and there is no "off-roading" permitted.
Things are changing. Imagine our surprise to see a mobile refreshment van and trailer pull into a lay-by and start supplying customers! How long before McDonald's opens up a branch?" Read more about this whole safari
