Slender Mongoose Safari

A detailed exploration of Lower Zambezi from two top-notch sister camps, each in a prime location in the national park. Expect a high level of care, first-class guiding and superb wildlife.

Slender Mongoose Safari: Summary

Slender Mongoose Safari in a nutshell

This comfortable fly-in safari offers an in-depth exploration of Lower Zambezi National Park from two prime locations in coveted riverside spots within the national park.

Situated in the Lower Zambezi’s best area for wildlife, Chiawa Camp is nestled amidst the mahogany trees of Zambezi River’s impressive banks. Here, considerable luxury is complimented by exceptionally high standards of service, brilliant views and notoriously good game. The camp’s two hides and elevated platforms also enable thrilling sightings from the comfort of camp as well as when out in the bush.

A little further down the river, in a slightly more remote area of park, Old Mondoro overlooks reed islands frequented by elephants and hippos. As Chiawa’s more rustic sister camp, it maintains the same excellent standard of quality and service, while offering enthusiastic safari-goers an even greater degree of exclusivity. There are very few permanent camps on this western side of the park, giving the area around Old Mondoro a stronger sense of wilderness.

Both camps are small, feel wonderfully intimate and are in stunning locations. They offer a wide range of activities, from canoeing, boating or catch-and-release fishing on the water, to superbly guided walking safaris and 4WD night and day game drives on land.

Chiawa Camp

Days 1-4

On the banks of the Zambezi River, Chiawa Camp sits beneath a grove of mahogany trees. As the first camp in Zambia's wildlife-rich Lower Zambezi National Park, it was opened by the Cumings family in 1989, and is still run by Grant Cumings. Over the years, it has evolved in size and comfort to a high degree of understated luxury.

Old Mondoro Bushcamp

Days 4-6

Taking its name from the Shona word for “lion”, Old Mondoro is owned and operated by the Cumings family. It's a small, relatively simple bushcamp situated in a remote area of Zambia's Lower Zambezi National Park, and overlooks reed islands in the Zambezi River where elephants regularly feed and hippos bask.
