Wild Dog Safari

An in-depth discovery of northern Botswana’s wilderness, from Chobe and the private Kwando Reserve to the Moremi and iconic Okavango Delta with a great variety of activities and wildlife.

Wild Dog Safari: Summary

Wild Dog Safari in a nutshell

Start your discovery of Botswana in small town of Kasane which sits in its northernmost corner of the country, where you’ll be met and driven to Muchenje Safari Lodge. Sat on escarpment with an enviable view across the Chobe River, it’s a warm, friendly place on a quieter stretch of the riverfront and a great base for boat trips to see the herds of elephants Chobe National Park is famous for, as well as night drives and walks in the Forest Reserve.

A short light aircraft flight hop takes you into the west of the National Park and the comfortable Savute Safari Lodge which takes its name from the fickle waterway it overlooks. The nearby Savuti Marsh hosts some excellent game viewing – we’ve encountered hunting wild dog packs, lion prides, leopards and a whole host of plains game here.

You next stop, Lagoon Camp, is also renowned for wild dog sightings and a real favourite of ours for predator sightings. Being in the vast private Kwando Reserve, you’ll have more freedom to explore its plains and riverine forests off road with a tracker too. Boat trips and fishing are seasonal.

Then fly south to Xakanaxa in the Moremi Game Reserve. A classic camp in a particularly beautiful portion of the Okavango Delta flanked by water home to grunting hippos, it offers a great mix of on-land and water-based activities with particularly excellent birding.

End at Splash Camp, a luxurious set up shaped around a waterhole that is a big draw for animals big and small. In another private reserve, you’ll get the quintessential Delta experience with day and night game drives, guided walking safaris, as well as mokoro canoe trips and boating activities exploring a patchwork of islands, channels and seasonal floodplains that are home to an amazing density of species, with lions, cheetahs, giraffe, buffalo and zebra particular specialities.

Muchenje Safari Lodge

Days 1-3

From high on the escarpment, Muchenje Safari Lodge overlooks a seasonal floodplain of the Chobe River. From this peaceful spot within Chobe Forest Reserve, with Namibia's Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip) in the distance and about 60km west of the bustling town of Kasane, this traditional lodge has the advantage of operating game drives in a relatively quiet area of the Chobe Riverfront.

Savute Safari Lodge

Days 3-6

Perched on the banks of the Savuti Channel within Chobe National Park, Savute Safari Lodge offers a good location from which to explore the nearby Savuti Marshes. Comfortable without being luxurious, the camp enjoys views over the Savute Channel and its two pumped waterholes, which – especially during the dry season – attract vast numbers of elephant to drink in the afternoons and evenings.

Lagoon Camp

Days 6-9

In the north of Botswana's vast Kwando Reserve, Lagoon Camp has a spectacular setting on the banks of the Kwando River. The wildlife around camp, where a band of lush riverine forest is interspersed with open plains, is particularly noted for the wild dogs that have habitually denned within the reserve since 1997, and the densities of elephants can also be exceptional.

Xakanaxa

Days 9-11

Camp Xakanaxa is a traditional-style camp located in one of the most beautiful areas of the Okavango Delta. Set in the north-east of the public area of Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve, the whole camp – widely known simply as Xakanaxa – is shaded by Kigelia and leadwood trees overlooking the Xakanaxa Lagoon. The game viewing in this area has historically been very good.

Splash Camp

Days 11-14

The smart Splash Camp, opened in June 2018, is located in a prime game-viewing area of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, bordering Moremi Game Reserve. The whole camp affords great views over a large pan, which attracts game all year round.

We may be able to build in some of these optional excursions from the Wild Dog Safari. Talk to us: they’re usually best arranged when you book.

Helicopter Flight - Botswana

Helicopter Flight - Botswana

Various: from 30 minutes to half a day.

Low-flying, agile and offering superb views, helicopters are an ideal way to move around the Okavango Delta. You can use them instead of fixed-wing inter-lodge transfers or as an addition to other wildlife watching activities, and of course, helicopters can hover to allow that perfect pic, whereas fixed-wings can’t.
